95 H1 Duramax 6.6 Conversion

Post by hameee@hotmail.com »

OK, I think I've read all I can about people doing Duramax conversions to there 6.5l pick up or suburban. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with installing one into a H1? I've also read about the big company's in the States that will do the conversion for you but they don't get into detail other than to say that they do a great job and use a lot of parts to help them justify the $30k - $50k price tag.

I plan on buying a 2002 chevy 2500 ($7000) complete and using it to install all the needed parts. I'm good with a wrench and know that somethings just won't transfer over to my H1 (drive shafts, fuel tank, gauge cluster, exhaust, etc).

Anyone have any input???

I believe, the motor, transfer case, computer and wiring, fuel lines,in tank pumps maybe, exhaust, are the main changes. A chap in Cambridge is doing one this winter on a gas 95,he has done other vehicle changeovers before.(Darcy)

He would be one to chat with. HEAVYDE is his online name.

PS how did the caliper rebuild go?

Great thanks, great kit had no problems and everything works perfect now.

Yes, I'll take lot's of pics and maybe even write a H1 conversion book that I wouldn't charge $100 for like other have been doing for the pick ups.

I saw a lot of duramax conversions around, a lot of them are basket cases. The hard part is the computer and electrical stuff which most shops completely screw up, I've seen hack jobs so bad the shop installed a second set of gauges from a chevy application into the interior and "hid" the old ones. Or they disable the check engine light and other guages.

You'll need a few inches of body lift and the hood shim spacers for clearance, and the proper engine and transmission mounts. You can fabricate your own but it may be less of a headache to order the 2006 H1 parts from AM General for that.

A friend of mine did his own version [Rob Everhart on various H1 forums] and used a laptop with EFI Live to do the reprogramming. Going that route you can have all your gauges working and even set up the truck to pass OBD-II emissions testing, you can have a real factory look and feel.

Another friend converted his H1 through John Goodman and H-Line conversions, a guy who made the news circuit a few years back doing high profile diesel conversions and got totally f#@ked on the deal. Paid over 30,000+ for the conversion.

The exhaust was done very roughly, and was hanging below the frame rails and cross members, no ground clearance at all. All sorts of computer errors and fuel supply issues. There were air leaks all over the fuel lines they used. It took an AM general master mechanic to sit down and fix all the issues on the truck.

There's another con artist or two running around and taking checks from H1 owners as a deposit and running off with the money, there's a bunch of guys over on the HML with pitchforks looking for that guy.

Predator if you got the money, they got a lot of contract work with the state department and border patrol upgrading H1's to use their Duramax setup. They got it figured out. They do have a 5.9L turbo Cummins conversion for $15,000 I checked out one day. I'd go cummins over duramax , going with the theory its cheaper to get parts for and maintain and you can get similar power out of it with a wide range of aftermarket mods available.

Either that or wait to see if GEP/AM General releases the Optimizer 3200 to the market. That engine would be a drop in replacement for the 6.5.
