H1 Duramax Diesel Conversion

Hey all,

I am considering duramax diesel conversion on a Hummer H1 I am potentially interested in purchasing. I am just curious if anyone here has done it before and can give me a rough total cost estimate. I figure between $10,000-$15,000 to complete the job with the body lift, etc.

Thanks for letting me know the rough cost involved.

I know of a local tuner/diesel mechanic that did the swap who billed the customer $30k for the swap, as it was his first swap, and would never do the swap again, even for double the money. That said, there are companies in the states that for nothing more than a Duramax/Allison combo, and in the vehicle (no performance upgrades or goodies) youre starting at $50k. Why are you considering the swap off the hop? Are you familiar with the H1 powerplants? Ive got an '01 6.5 TD under my hood, and while the vehicle is not a highway rocket (nor will any version/powerplant change this lol), it's got more than enough power to get thru most obstacles and whats thrown at it. If you wanted to make an uber-potent rig, your money might better be spent in other upgrades, ie: Lockers, 12k halfshafts etc. Remember though, the more power you throw at any rig, the easier and more obvious you will find its next weakest link, only to have to chase down other needed upgrades, nevermind the fact that underhood power isnt always whats needed to get a truck thru an obstacle, but rather the handling, and disbursement of power and torque. I also think that getting used to the unique driving and offroading capabilities in the hummer is worth familiarizing yourself with first, and understanding how it handles itself, where its strengths and weaknesses are on the trails, or elsewhere, is worthwhile before doing major surgery.

Tell us more about the truck youre interested in for a better perspective, and good luck.

Thanks for the detailed info! The reason I am interested in the conversion is not for power but to convert a great condition gasoline model to a diesel. I really don't want a gas H1. There is a lot to be said for the diesels. Maybe I should look into an original diesel motor, used, or even just wait for the right H1 to come along. I have been looking since May and am getting anxious now.

The gasoline model I found is owned by a member on this board. The white 1995 wagon in the classifieds section. I just really want a diesel model.

Dont settle, or meddle to get yourself to an expected point of comfort. The peace of mind and enjoyment you'll inevitably get from finding the actual truck that youre struggling to hold out for will be worth it in the end. If you arent on The Hummer Network Forums, Id join up there too, and wait very patiently until the right truck comes along.

Trust me, I was * < that close to pulling the trigger on a 99 wagon that had already had the #8 block replaced (before the seller owned it, so no history/details was available), only upon my pre-purchase to find out that the defective #8 block was replaced with ANOTHER defective block. The truck was otherwise awesome, a bunch of the modifications Id want, owned by an honest seller (as much as he knew - local Law Enforcement member), etc etc. I was really choked, and hated to pass it up, but the right truck did come along, and the tradeoff was that I learned a tonne more about the trucks in the interim while waiting for the exact truck I wanted to pop up and become available.

Wait it out. Cutting corners will be a disappointment in the long run

Hey I agree with the upgrade leads to more upgrades even with the H3 the bumper winch lead to a leveling kit then lights then...
