H1 On Board Air Upgrades

Making some progress on my project. Using a 5 way, 3 position switch, Ive now made it possible to isolate my air to an easy-to-access auxillary port, or go into my CTIS system. The Hummer comes with a Central Tire Inflation System (CTIS) which allows the user to select the inflation or delfation of either front/rear/all four tires at once from within the cab. Under the hood on the compressor was a small fitting like you'd see on a valve stem, where one could run a small dinky hose and fill up tires, tubes, and air matresses, but the problem I didnt like was that it also kept on filling up your tires at the same time. With the help of a few buddies I was able to pick their collective brains for assistance and guidance on wiring, components, etc.



5-way 3-position switch - $35

various fittings & hose - about $35-40 ish

In-cab three way switch to control the solenoid - $10



Now to just get a proper bracket made up for the manifold, and to add a safety release valve (like the one on the manifold) between the pump and the solenoids. I built this system with a couple levels of redundancy, the safety release valve will expel air if it sees anything over 150 psi (which Im doubting the pump could even get that high), the guage is good to 200 psi, and the hose is good to 300 psi (or how well my fittings hold up).



I guess it really boils down to having liked the older style CTIS Aux setup (which was closer routed to that same cutout, but was unable to isolate its output), and also not wanting to always have to open my hood to help someone with a flat tire, etc. I will admit Im kinda a gadget/gismo junkie as well, which played a role in this project. I know not everyone will approve, but what do you think?

Princess auto was the source of the valve/relays/solenoid assembly. I believe it was a panasonic unit of which I'll try and snag the part number tomorrow!

It seemed I outsmarted myself when arranging my equipment, as my safety valve I bought is actually rated at 100 psi which works out perfectly as our pump can hit 120psi or so. I have considered adding a tank to my setup, and likely will in the future, but want to see how and where I need to improve/re-plumb/modify my setup before jumping into that stage of the project.



The solenoid was sourced from a chain of stores here called "Princess Auto" and was $34.99, the entire cost (if I wasnt learning so much about what components are available at the same time) could easily be done for in & around $100-$125 or so. Ive been asked if Id consider making this a package upgrade - I think I want to test it first for a few months, especially thru the winter before making a decision like that.



I strongly recommend it to anyone with a 99+ H1 (as the underhood configuration is the same). Im not familiar enough with the under-hood of the earlier model years to figure out if it could be wired up with similiar equipment.

I'll send you a photo of what mine looks like under the hood, I ahve a '96 and my compressor is in a different location then yours..

Hey Derek, speaking of an Avitar, how did mine get changed back to the Hummer Bike?? Could we change it back to the Hummer, if you still have the pic of my baby...<img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... #>/huh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='???' />
