A Great "HOW TO" spot to post your step by steps on how to do, build, or fix something.. NON Truck Specific..

Warn winch rebuilding

Post by Tom »

Just wanted to share some photos of my rebuild of 3 Warn M12000 winches.

The hardest/worst part is the gear case, all 3 contained water and mud combined with grease. A absolute mess to clean.

Because these winches spent most of their life on the front of a truck that has been driven in the winter, they are badly pitted and corroded.

Two of the winches are 2003, and the third I would say is a 1996 (I have only partly pulled apart the 1996)

Kind of condition/corrosion:

Parts sandblasted:

Gears washed and re-greased:

Fresh Paint Job/Rebuilt motor:

Drums Machined:

New Gaskets:

All Assembled:

New Seals:

Drums Painted:

All Finished (minus the electrical)

Still putting in together.. have a box of new bushings.

Working on that right now. It has a couple of machined surfaces that can't be sandblasted as they need to be within a a certain tolerance. I think I will take them to a buddy's machine shop so he can machine them on his lathe. Will see what he says and I will keep you updated!

Just finished rebuilding my Warn winch as well! Anyone need any help let me know, I can set you up! The warn winch is actually a very simple system and not hard to repair. I also got a new motor for 70 bucks and it works perfect!!!
