Hello & Welcome to the CHC CB Radio West <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... /wavey.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':wavey:' />

Basically this is an open discussion about channels, call signs & conduct for the Alberta/BC chapters of the CHC.

Channels:

The common use channel by CT4WD, Jeep & a few other clubs is 11 ; this might be a good channel for us as well for long distance communications so we can keep track of where other clubs are, reports of trail conditions or SRD officers near them, and whatever else they are up to.

This of course is bad for privacy, so we should establish a CHC channel and also a backup channel as well. I think tentatively we can refer to them as CHC-1 and CHC-2.

Call Signs

As I found out, names don't work so well and it would be better if we could find something with some anonymity on a public radio as well.

When we talk to other clubs, we should refer to our group as CHC

In talking to one another, a 2 or 3 letter call sign might be best; for instance I could us HN (Hummer Nick)

Conduct

Because CB goes a lot farther and a lot more clubs are using it, we should refrain from swearing or vulgar jokes on CB, also from poking fun at at anyone.

When addressing people within our club we can use the following format;

NICK "HN to HD" (Hummer Nick to Hummer Dave)

DAVE "This is HD, go ahead"

When trying to contact the CHC group in general if we have been split off or are trying to join in for a run we can use a similar format;

NICK "HN to CHC" (Hummer Nick to Club)

ANY CHC MEMBER "This is CHC, go ahead"

If we do get a lot of chatter from other clubs we can call out to switch to CHC-1 or CHC-2... not the actual channel number.

Any suggestions or comments?

I don't like the letter call signs... "HD" or "NH" - we should give ourselves handles...

In Ontario we use channel 4 for trail and road convoys as for vulgarities they are frowned on on any radio transmission we also use channel 4 on frs radios on trail. Oh and to call someone use CQ call ie CQ any Hummers.

Just wanted to add that depending what radio band you listen to the calling will vary.

Amateur Radio uses the Call Sign of whom you are calling or looking for followed by your own Call Sign second (or Handle as many use in CB land), similiar to what I hear the local police do on scanner but they use Unit number.

Long ago when CB had to be licensed for Alberta it was an XM ID followed by 6 numbers but most adopted Handles or Nicknames <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... rgreen.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':mrgreen:' />

CQ comes from the CW Abbreviations used meaning "Calling Any Station" as shotgun noted calling any Hummers

Most also use the more common "10 Codes" when chatting and the "Phonetic Alphabet" more for Sideband use.

Here is a list showing them for anyone interested My link

Most Emergency services follow a different version of the "10 Code" with their own code description.

As long as it is simple and easy to use and works for the club and interaction with other clubs that may also already have a standard they follow is a great idea.

I monitor and listen to local services where ever I go on my Amateur radio as well as a Commercial radio with the Standard Alberta/BC Trucking Channels,etc. LAD and Alta Open Channels.

Finally found a supplier for the Midland Mobile and Portable CB 75-822 that I was looking for so should have it in a week after tracking a Canadian supplier. I liked the ability to use in vehicle and handheld.

Hope you guys had fun on the weekend with the other club you hooked up with.

Duly noted, thanks for the comments guys!

Other club was pretty good, although I am finding out now that we passed right by yet another club on our way out... I had signed up at the import 4x4 forum when it was looking like Hummer was going to become a Chinese company, lol

One of the tips I got was to pick a channel somewhere in the middle so SWR tuning isn't a huge issue;

So I am thinking Channel 16 as our primary and Channel 29 as our backup... thoughts <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... e_geek.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':geek:' />
