Ind. plant building more Humvees for Afghan forces

Post by dwaxman1 »

MISHAWAKA, Ind. (AP) — A northern Indiana factory is going to remain busy building Humvees that will go to Afghanistan's military.

AM General says the contract with the U.S. Army will have the Mishawaka (mish-ah-WAH'-kuh) factory build 808 Humvees and 744 armored troop enclosures for the vehicles by the end of next February.

Company spokeswoman Celeste Ross tells the South Bend Tribune that Afghanistan is among more than 50 countries that have bought AM General's military vehicles.

The order is part of a contract the Pentagon awarded last year that calls for AM General to build up to nearly 12,000 Humvees. The contract is for a base year with two optional years and also provides for continuing Humvee support such as service parts, training and field service.
