Globe and Mail Hummer article

Post by boarral »

Globe and Mail printed an article on Hummer vandalism last Friday. They interviewed me and had photographs of the damage to my Hummer in the print version, though online they do not. So this is a pseudo-shameless plug. <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... >/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

They even quote me at the very end. <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... /smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I called around today and managed to snag a leftover copy from a newstand from Friday. I guess my 15 minutes of fame are over now. <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... #>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' /><edited><editID>boarral</editID><editDate>2007-09-10 11:33:53</editDate></edited>

I was interviewed as well but I couldnt help them with the Photograph section since it was hard to distinguish the keyed scratch with all the other custom pinstripping that i have put on it <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... >/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

I was worried about that myself. The photographer had to work the angle for a couple minutes in order to capture the key damage without the Rocky Mountain Pinstriping. <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... /smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I just bought an H3 recently, and find myself with two reactions: <DIV> </DIV><DIV>(1)...constantly defending myself to friends/family/acquaintances.  I start by saying it is the same size or smaller than your Touareg/SantaFe/Explorer/Freestar, and I get the same mileage with my 5-cyl engine... so @#% off.  My other car is a vw diesel, so my avg so-called "carbon footprint" is a heck of a lot smaller than your subaru hippycar etc.  ...and your car's going to poison thousands of children wherever your hybrid car battery gets dumped when it dies, and it poisoned lots of people at its fabrication plant when it was built... yada yada yada. Then I get impolite.  I have not yet suffered vandalism or public heckling, but I'm sure it will happen.  My defensiveness makes me feel weak because it implicitly insults H1 or H2 owners by trying to differentiating myself - the issue is that people are being asshats over a vehicle brand name; or </DIV><DIV> </DIV><DIV>(2) It's none of your business what I drive.  Go attack Lexus LS Hybrid owners, whose owners get worse mileage than I do with their "green" cars. </DIV><DIV> </DIV><DIV>My wife worries incessantly about this.  Luckily we live in a rural village and only visit the city from time to time.</DIV><DIV> </DIV><DIV>edit - after reading that article I'm rethinking my locking gas cap idea.  I usually have them on all my vehicles, but the H3 didn't.  I decided not to get one since I couldn't believe it could happen.  AFter reading that article and remember that I did in fact get some looks when I drove it through the Byward Market the other day.... I find that H3 owners have it even worse than H2 owners because you have other Hummer owners moaning that it isn't a real Hummer, even more than the flak the H2 originally got. After going offroad with H3s and having them easily keep up, I can say it's a crock. H3s motor around great offroad, even with stock equipment. So I can see it being bad from both angles.

I wouldn't worry about it though. You bought the vehicle for yourself, not for others. (Well, maybe your family!) Enjoy what you bought. It's a great vehicle and if you're happy with it, don't worry what others care. If you get vandalized, you get vandalized and there is nothing you can do but call the insurance company. It sucks, but I know people with 10-year old trucks getting keyed just because someone was bored and thought it would be fun. Happens to everyone, the reasons are just different.
