Ye Ol 4L80e

Hey folks, ive been trying to hunt down some info on the 4l80e, and seeing that theres been a good ammount of folks that have done cummins coversions on their trucks, or have worked on the T-Case, maby you can help me out.

Ive started a small thread on the hummer network forum about building the ultimate 4l80e, ive decided it was time to tackel my first rebuld of a automatic transmission. Not that theres anything wrong with my current one in the truck, everything is running good. But ive got some plans in the future to build another truck with a cummins, and i would like to use the 4l80e as the transmissiont that goes with it. Im looking to build one that is designed to hold around 1000hp+, which for the 4l80e is not too difficult to do, ive already got my parts list setup, and got a good ideal of what i want to do.

The question i have right now is though. Im on the hunt for a sutable 97+ year 4l80e out of a gm/etc that would be most suited to my application. Or more specificly the output shaft on the transmssion. The output shafts can be changed out to the coresponding type. Theres 6 different types of outputs shafts on the 4l80e. But i have no ideal which one the H1 uses, and was wondering if anyone can help shine some light on the type that our trucks have. I can go out and buy almost any 4l80e and then buy the output shaft to work, but to change the output shaft, the entire transmission needs to be apart. Which i would have when i am rebuilding it

So does anyone have a pic of the output shaft when they have eiter removed their transmission, or changed out their T-Case. this would be of great help

Heres a choice of output shafts. I believe that its either the 3" short stubby, or 6-1/2" full spline to fit into the t-case

Thanks

When getting an adapter plate, get the thin (1") version. That way you will not have to modify the frame member up front.

See if you really want A/C, as the original 6BT 12V position is not viable.

Search for a lower rpm torque converter, larger tires(40), 2-3" body lift. All needed to do this conversion.

As well as a trany controller.

Electric fans,intercooler......

Exhaust manifold needs to be a 3-4 turbo mount.

I have a 4L80e out of a GM van body. Can be purchased cheap for the starting of rebuild.(2 wheel drive model)

Now if you want large hp's going thru the drive train, might as well get ready to replace the next weakest link down the line.

A stock 140hp cummins can still push your hummer hard!!Lots of bottom end balls! <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... >/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' />

Might I suggest that you use TCI transmission kit and make your 4 speed a 6 speed and you will have paddle shifting to boot!

Check it out!!!

Ive been eyeing those 6 speed kits. The one reason that i might not go down that route is because the final drive (0.75) is still the same as the regular 4 speed final drive. If it was lower like a 0.60 or such, that would be very tempting. 1600-1700rpm at 110km/h would be nice

My plan for the transmission is, do a HD rebuild, and swap it with the one in my truck now, and test the mods out. I am planning to get a lower stall TC as well. Then build up my old trans the same way for use with the cummins build. Tranny computer wize ive heard the compushift is the way to go.

Parts wize im lookin at:

Red eagle clutches with kolene steels

34 element sprags

billet input and output shafts (probably only going to do this on the 2nd trans to handle the umph im gonna breath into the cummins)

and the Transgo 4l80e-HD2 shift kit.

A low stall HD toruqe converter; theres a few models out there havent decided yet. I really want one of these in my current truck. 90% of the driving i do on our country roads, most speed limits are 60km/h, and its very hilly and i just cant stand it reving around 1700-1900rpm gradually going up a hill untill the tc locks at 75km/h.

The main plan for the 2nd truck(this is gonna be a 2-3 year project in the works) is to build the ultimate offroad and tow vehicle. And depending on what i find. Perferably a 2 door, or 4 door soft top, with lots and lots of goodies and upgrades.

I have even contacted Allison to see if I could put the 6speed in my H2...no real interest from them to help.

I contacted Aisin to see if I could get one of their new 8speed trannies and never got a call back nor an email...disappointing!

I even asked TCI if they could make a 6speed out of my 4L65E and they sent it wasn't worth their time.

I want more gears but I want better than the 6L90E that is used in the 08 and 09 H2s!
