Wall Climbing with your H1

Hey Guys.

I'm sure everyone has seen the YouTube video of the H1 2 door truck climbing the 6 foot vertical wall.

There is a second video where they show him trimming the front frame back a few inches and then converting it to hinge up and the windshield instead of the front tilt.

Any ideas what else is done to his truck? What size tires etc?

Kind of a cool party trick.

He is running a 42" tire, and chances are a lift to accomodate said tires, and I believe he modified the front frame rails to shorten it and rid the truck of a winch or front bumper. I believe if memory serves me correct, that he was sporting Auburn's front and rear as well.

IIRC His name is John Andres, but he is featured in Tony Anzovino's video series and iirc he posts or used to post on one of the other H1 boards (HML).

Not sure if it had it then, or if it is pertinent, but the truck also did eventually sport a 5.9 Cummins swap. The truck has changed hands atleast once or twice since he sadly sold it last year. It is by far one of my favorite two-doors ever, along with the likes of AliceTheCat, and StudentDriver's HMC2/XLC2's.

EDIT: Found the video which shows some of what he did, and shows some of the clips for those unfamiliar with this all - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbA1N0N7wMU&feature=plcp

His Illegal Wheeling series are second to none with some beautiful trucks being driven the way they were built to.

You're correct on all accounts Hesh. <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... ght_on.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':right_on:' />

Thanks guys I was always curious what went into that truck. I thought for sure they would be bigger than 42's though.

I have been looking at designing a suspension lift. I want to be able to center the front diff and upgrade to the 12,000 half shafts. But with the Cummins the engine is too low right now to center it without dropping the center diff vs. the chassis by about an inch.

IIRC Rubberduck offers a 12K halfshaft upgrade kit, that doesnt mention their diff-centering kit as a pre-requisite. That said, I get the benefit of a centered front diff is that you dont need to carry more than one size halfshaft for all four corners, but beefing up the halfshaft with the previously mentioned upgrade kit might HEAVILY reduce your chances of breaking the shaft in the first place, thus lower importance of carrying spares... ?

EDIT - here we go, this is the one I was referring to - http://www.rubberduck4x4.com/store/pc/H ... it-c34.htm

Maybe it is the best answer to your question/situation?

Very true, That might be the logical solution. But a little bit of a lift would make room for some even bigger tires.

Bigger tires make for bigger loads on drivetrain components, such as halfshafts. Not only that, but a lift (assuming you meant a body lift) will not raise your powertrain, thus still causing an interference with your front diff. Id build the truck up and adding the bigger components once it is suitable, rather than having to chase stronger drivetrain components to compensate for oversized tires, etc. Better to be prepared before, than accomodate for them after... Or atleast that's how I would look at it.

The bigger the tires, and the more powerfull the powerplant, the sooner youre just going to find the next weakest link in the chain. The truck itself is EXTREMELY competent and capable in stock trim out of the box, moreso than almost (if not all) other vehicles in or below the same $ value.

No I would be lowering the drive train, thus leaving my interference issue with the front diff. It already has a body lift on it and the 40 inch tires do rub a little as it is.

My background is in automotive engineering and have worked for a couple of the big automakers in the past. So it's really hard for me to just leave well enough alone. There are a couple H1s in Lethbridge AB that have the 10 or 12 in lifts on them. They are used for advertising. I've climbed underneath them and took a look at what they have going for them. Very simple and effective, I really can't believe they charge 15 Grand for those lifts online. So I would be going for a much more reasonable size lift that would still be useful off-road not just for show.

Forgive me, I applaud your project but Im somewhat of a purist. The H1 is incomparable out of the box to almost any other consumer-available mass-produced vehicle offered, and to go to such an extent just seems like it detracts from the high-clearance, low-cog intent of the hummer's design team, etc.

Im still interested to see updates, and encourage you to do so, please dont take my words or advise as discouragement.
