After seen few oem failed on trails and reading about the problem, I think tie rods are the weakest link for off-roading. Any suggestions or experience how to improve in this area please?

I heard of these When I had my H3 alpha.... It depends on the year of your rig. The 08's+ went to a thinker shaft which should be fine. 07 and under had a thinner one which was proned to fail...



I had stock and my alpha and never had an issue....

I bought a piece from him as well - just in case... but who is going to change it if it breaks on trail :-) ??

one other point comes to my mind,, if tie rod are the weakest point it prevent more serious break along the front end. if this doesn't break it might break more serious component instead that will require air lifting out of the woods. <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... #>/dry.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='<_<' />



Personally i prefer beefing from the inside out, not the outside in <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... >/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

Both valid points boys !!! HUMMAN bro, i guess for now. You just have to wheel with a guy with Lot's of tools and is a Mechanic !! Lol , For Marc ..He is very Mechanically thrifty . Also he has KEV ( Polar Bear) on speed dial <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... feSpit.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':coffeespit:' /> . Speaking of front end stuff Lads . This weekend was interesting for me . With out all the details why ..etc . My passenger front dropped .. boom !!! limped the proud warrior home Friday night. Went to the dealer Sat where i know a awesome HUMMER mechanic. I ended up having it set up height wise to the Rough Country lift specs . Less wear and tear on the front end and better feel and drive ability . So i went from 24.25 .. which was pretty high . Back to 23.25 front and of course the kit came with 2 inch spacer and the heavy duty 3/4 inch rear shackles . My 35's don't rub on full lock anymore . Put the sway bar back in specs . Yes i have abit of a rake . But still have lift and it looks pretty cool . The drive is awesome now . I might throw in a Day Star body lift near the end of the year . Air Doc and slidders are on tap asap ! As for the Heavy duty front end parts . Plain truth !!! It comes down to your wallet ! Other mods that you might want more. Or are more of a priority ! BOTH YOUR RIGS ARE THE DONE AWESOME 5.3 , LOCKERS . You both don't have 1 thing .. which is a must ! Which fortunately i am blessed to have .... ROOF MARKERS !!!! I do not agree with stronger tie rods at all!



Most people wants everything to be as strong as possible and I agree but you need to choose what you want to break if something has to give. My choice is always to make everything that is hard to access (normally anything between the frame rails) as strong as possible, so that those will have little chance of breaking.



So my front and rear differential have 1540H shafts, which are close to unbreakable. But my U-joints and front half shafts are stock, that way IF something has to break it will be the U-joints which are simply to replace or my front half shafts. Either way yes it is inconvenient but I would rather be able to replace a cheap part on the trail in under 30mins that have to be dragged out and have major $$$$$ to fix!



For steering, again everything inside that framerails is beefed up, my tie-rods are stock. This way in the event I do something stupid, I have a fusible link that is fast and simply to replace, instead of major carnage and me scratching my head and wondering how I am possibly going to fix it to get home!



So remember make your Hummer Stronger, but chose wisely where you put the beef and then you will have years of safe and trouble free offroading instead of tears!

This is the same logic that applied to the H1's with the halfshafts being one of the most common places of failure, and an engineered point of failure too so that the trucks could still return (with relative ease) to base while out on ops if they suffered a broken shaft from what I remember reading. You'll always have a weak link in a chain, replace one link, and the weakest point just moves elsewhere...

The newer 08 and up H3's have bigger tie rods... so if you were going to upgrade, I'd go with a set of those. The steering rack on the H3 is already notoriously weak, I wouldn’t beef them up any more than that.
