LOCKING DIFFS H1

I have a 1998 H1 with stock diffs. Will I notice a huge difference in off roading performance if I was to install two ARB lockers? Is it worth the money to invest in them? Thanks. DRM

That is similiar to asking if aggressive mud tires are really needed or your bald street tires will do for off-road!



The stock H1 Torsen Differentials are very good, but very dependant on whether you know how to properly use the Brake Throttle Modulation technique. Twin ARB Locker will allow you to walk up stuff that you would be struggling to find traction with the stock torsen diffs. They will also allow you way more control over technical sections and you can also use them as your escape route...before winching. You can go into a deep mud hole and if you get stuck, then you can engage your lockers and then drive out. You can use your lockers to safely 3-wheel or even 2-wheel over very tight and technical rock ledges.



In other words, LOCKERS are Just that AWESOME!!!

Lockers are probably one of the best bang for the buck modifications you can do for offroad improvents. I like the Auburns over the ARB but so long as you do a good amount of research which unit you want to go with and the pros/cons of each, you'll have a helluva time.

Not sure how much 4 wheeling you have done with your H1 but I've had mine for just over a year and have a detroit rear locker, and a stock open front diff. There hasn't been anything yet that I haven't been able to get through with this set up. I do want to upgrade and put an air locker on the front in the future. But it is an option to just do the rear first and see how it goes and then put the front locker in later.



Perhaps I'm just not trying hard enough to get stuck, lol.

Personally, I agree with Hesh. While the ARB Air Lockers are super strong,what I don't like is having both an air system and an electrical system that can fail. I have Eaton E-locker front and rear in my truck and love them. The Auburns are great as well, especially since they allow Limited Slip when unlocked and spool when locked...you even when they are off, you can still do some awesome stuff!



However, whether you choose ARB, Eaton, Auburn or Detroit, any locker is well worth the expense and effort to install them!
