Im wondering the same question. Looking to buy but the prices are very inconsistent from unit to unit or year to year.

They all cost money in the long run for fixing and keeping up on. Most will tell you it costs more than the vehicle value to maintain it for a decade properly. In that regard just buy what you like and get the best you can afford. It will all pan out in 20 years or so. I do work myself so i would be inclined to purchase a vehicle with serious issues and get a great deal and then put 15-20k into it to get it up to par. This way i end up with an awesome truck. If you have to pay someone for quality work that will add up fast,, very fast!!
Problem is even if you get a great truck you will still need to put the same parts as everyone else to keep it a nice truck over time and they eat parts like crazy.
You could possibly find a great low mile truck with a #8 problem or otherwise blown truck and use that as a base for a conversion.Be prepared to wait about 2 years before you drive it down the road as conversions are not trivial. Preditor could charge up to 70k for a DMAX conversion or you could do it yourself for under 20k and have a few headaches for the next while. Most of the #8 issue trucks are long gone. I have one and its still awesome at 130kmiles.
I would try to get an original truck with all the original stuff or as close as possible that is running and just start making a list and fixing stuff over a couple of years. Any truck on the road running without issue of some sort is going to cost 50k or therabouts as a starting point.
The status of the rims and tires add or remove significant value depending on what is on and how worn it is. You could spend 5k on Alpha 2 piece rims and Goodyear MTRs or 500 dollars on 1 piece steel rims and militay surplus tires. The range is wide.
Suspension componets wear silly on these trucks and if you want to run oversize tires bank on replacing a lot of suspension stuff often. Oil seals in the hubs, differentials, tcase fail if you breath on them!! I am always amazed how little buyers check under the truck for rust and other emerging issues. Its the first thing i check.
Seam rust is a big issue on the steel roof panels and will cost a fortune to fix right. A lot of wagons become 4dht's or open tops when the dreaded rust shows up its cheaper to convert than buy a new 15k roof. Beware!!
Interiors are pretty crappy if you ask me and a lot of screwholes in the moldings will be broken so i would look at all the interior carefully.to asses the repair gravity.
One good thing to do is get oil samples for analysis before buying a truck. Engine oil trans fluid and tcase fluid are the most important but brake fluids PS fluid hubs diff etc are other possibles at least to check. Also a combustion leak test is prudent on a cold truck.
Finally none of this answers your question about black book value!!

I'm super curious about the black book value from an insurance point of view. If my beloved truck gets written off how much are they going to give me for it and how much damage does there have to be to write it off.
Every time I ask the insurance people about it they say they will look into it and never get back to me.

Get an apprasel done so you have an idea what she is worth.Plus if it is a good price, send to ins. company. Write offs are about the cost of the truck. FYI a wagon roof is worth $15000 new plus windows and, and.

hahaha, I would maybe put the doghouse back on first before you get it appraised...The pricing is always all over the map on these trucks.. I have seen them go high and then some go low.. it really depends on the truck itself and how is has been maintained, I am sure Serge can give you a book value but I think these trucks are much more then that...much much more..
