Moving to BC... bringing an H1.

Any Vancouver area H1 owners around?

I'm looking at relocating up to Vancouver from California to work on a film, plan is to come up for about a year for the job then return to the US, debating on properly importing my H1 and getting it plated/registered in BC vs just leaving it registered and titled in CA.

H1 is a 1998 turbo diesel, passes CA emissions, would pass a safety inspection since it has regular dealer C service here.

I'm fine on importing, I have the title, and familiar with vehicle importation into Canada [my cost would be a few hundred dollars].

My questions are with emissions, insurance and vehicle inspection stations? Anyone have experience with that in BC? I'm aware light vehicle emissions in BC is being phased out next year. I'm concerned about the socialized insurance costs in BC [My insurance in California is very low, my H1 is my most cheapest car to insure]

Any thoughts?

It's likely I'll leave everything registered in Cali since I plan to return to the US once the job is over.

No need to import as you will be here on a work visa and not establishing residency. As it is required by Immigration Law that you retain ties to the US keeping your vehicle registered there is one way to show that. My H3 is registered out of NY state as I am in Canada on a temporary permit myself and won't import it until my permanent resident application is approved, then I get to import it for free.

Yes , keep it in the USA registry. The safety inspections up here are a pain ,
as well as the no oil spillage from vehicles in the west.
Oli leaks on a Hummer??LOL     really. no leaks allowed. (from what I was told from an Alberta Hummer)

as far as i am aware its a pain in the butt to re register US truck in USA after canada....brokers/ taxes levies etc...plus california emission laws bulshit...keep it safe bud. i would be very mad if some californian idiot make you come back to BC to get some extra paperwork...

Ill leave the truck as is... I'm actually a Canadian who immigrated to the us ... Problem is the tax credits in Vancouver and Montreal for film work killed all of the business that I do in LA. Never thought I'd have to go back to Canada to work for a us studio but there you go.

Ill keep everything registered at my folks place ( us address )

Hi Kurt:

I've been away a while.  There are a bunch of Vancouver area H1s.  I'm a ferry ride away on the Sunshine Coast.  I was just discussing getting a bunch of us together sometime soon  with a Vancouver H1 owner a few days ago.  When are you coming up and where will you be based?
