winch for H1

Post by drewman »

Hey All, Brought my H1 out from Toronto to Kelowna BC and discovered it def needs a winch for the terrain! I have a 17.5 K Keeper winch (with a wireless control which is a sweet feature that Warn didnt offer) that I use swing between a couple of other vehicles and was going to fab up a plate/  box and bolt to the the stock front bumper of my 97' H1. I pulled the schematics of the H1 stock bumper &  winch mounted bumper and although the attaching point details difer (frame extensions for the winch mounted bumper)  the stock bumper has 2 additional fastening points. My thoughts are to stiffen the stock bumper with a piece of 6"bent plate (or similiar approach) and mount the winch /plateto this? Anyone have any experience with this? Would only have the winch mounted when wheel'in so shouldnt need to increase the spring rates..I'm thinkin? Thx in advance for any advice on this. Drew

Ps I also want to give a shout out to Phil Robertson (H1 master mechanic in North Toronto) who helped me out via telephone when I got struck by the red vampire (transfer-case cooler failure) in Thunderbay whilst enroute to Kelowna from Toronto last summer..thx Phil..I owe you some beers when I visit next!

I'm guessing that the winch won't mount between the frame rails like the factory winch so you are looking to mount it in front of the frame rails?
