this is part of an article from the Toronto Star about gas prices and the effect it is having to the economy 



"For example, the compact Chevrolet Cobalt would burn through $3,754 a year going traveling 30,000 kilometres.

That's $1,444 more per year than at 80 cents a litre, based on estimates done by Runzheimer International of Rochester, Wis.

A large Mercury Grand Marquis would burn an extra $2,100 a year, which is more than most Toronto drivers would spend to insure that car for the same period.

The $5,495 annual cost to fuel a Marquis at yesterday's price is more than Runzheimer estimates would be the cost per year to buy a brand new Cobalt, and sell it after three years.

Something will have to give in the budgets of households and businesses if pump prices stay so high, or rise to $1.50 by summer as some analysts have forecast.

There is some anecdotal evidence gas prices are starting to influence driving behaviour, but we'll have to wait for more data to confirm if we have reached what writer Malcolm Gladwell calls a tipping point."

I can believe it.  Our H2 is now almost solely used for going offroad.  That is the main reason we are looking at an H1 - if it is going to sit apart from a few occasions, might as well go that route.  In the meantime, we are looking at an Altima hybrid or Civic hybrid.  A lot of people moan about the environmental impact of hybrids, but for me is it simply a matter of fuel economy.  I don't throw garbage out the window or tear up pristine meadows offroad, but I am not to the point of turning my back to a hybrid because of the impact the batteries have on the environment.  When it comes between the environment and being able to afford to drive to work, I'll lean towards the latter.

I would not have to consider it an option if I had a job that paid a decent salary.  I am weighing my options.  With the experience I have, I am having a difficult time understanding this.  "Alberta Advantage" my arse.
