I have DDM Tuning 55W 5000K 9007 H/L beam, no problem so far after 3.5 years.

In back of head it was something I'd like to do as well, we live in the mountains (middle of no where) and get sooooo dark at night.

Halogens work, but been pondering either different head lights or a nice LED bar in front,

I've had hids before but the ballast didn't last and didn't have high and low. I find hids are great in the winter.

I LOVE my HIDs! I will never use stock halogen lights again! I have been running mine for over 2 years now and no issues at all. Except at temps below -20C...they take awhile to warm up!

I just re-wired the 4x PIAA 520's that came with the Gobi roof rack and the light output SUCKS big time. I might convert it to 100W HID or install 2 52" OSRAM LED light bar.
