Need a New Winch for Christmas?

Yes, Of Course you DO!!!

I personally loathe WARN winches and continually see them fail time and time again on the trail!!! I normally watch guys with Warns pulling and I always anticipate the solenoid or motor failure...and it almost always happens!

That was the case again yesterday on our off road day!

So, IF you need a Winch for your Hummer, here are some things to keep in mind!

1. HIGH Horsepower Electric Motors, this helps to provide substantial pulling power and allows for long full pulls without overheating the motor. Normally anything over 5hp and you can get up to 7.5hp!!

2. HIGH numerical gear ratio, This is more important than most people think! The high gearing combined with a High HP motor translates to LOW Current Draw and LOW Heat Output which equals reduced strain on your battery and alternator and faster pulls since you are not waiting for the winch to cool down!

Those are the two most important points to consider when looking to buy a new winch! All the other stuff is just gravy! Things like wireless remote, etc!

Here are some great examples of the BEST Winches to Spend YOUR Money on;

(Humman has one and it seems to work great!)

I personally own a Smittybilt 15000lbs X2O winch on the front of my H2 and I have a T-Max 10000lbs (still my original since 2006!) working on the back. Both winches deliver exceptional reliability and pulling power time and time and time again!!

As well, I am sure there are other good winches but the ones listed above are those that I have confidence in and I have seen work hard and live on the trail!

Oh and SAY NO to SYNTHETIC Cable!! But That is another story!!

Happy Shopping!!!

And MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

Great info! I have the factory WARN winch on my truck, but for the next year or so it shouldn't get used much so no immediate plan to change it out....but when I do I will be looking for this post.

Now when do we get the story on the synthetic cable? I have heard so much saying it is the way to go providing you got a good wire and the fairleads were correct for it....

very curious to hear your take on this.

Thanks

DG

BTW, Roy sells Rugged Ridge winches and they also meet the HP and gearing criteria! So why not give Roy a call and see if he can hook you up with a great winch!!!
