It took me 30 years, but finally, a dream come true

Since the first time I saw them, I have always been fascinated by the Humvees. An extension of my love for Jeeps. So far I have owned three Cherokees, a YJ, TJ, and JKU. I also would one day want a vintage army Jeep. Many times I came close to getting a H1 or Humvee and it didn't work out for one reason or another. Well, this fall the stars aligned and I am working out some small issues to get my dream ride on the road. It will get real when it's all done and rumbling down the road in my noisy drafty dream.

1987 HMMWV M998 with a 6.5 litre diesel. (24 volt)

Thanks for the friendly welcome. I hope to keep the Humvee true to its basic military roots.

I give you 3 months before you start the mods...we all have given in to the mod bug!

I expect the first mod will be some new seats like Beard or Reccaro etc!

Busy weekend, I just finished all the work it needed for the safety. Washer pump, lighting and steering idler arm replaced. Plates lit up and mounted.

Is the washer Container new as well? Seems clean....

Ps, what the weight on the 87?

Also did 6.5 come in them ? Or was t a 6.2?

I'm soooo not used to the 24v set up....but even say it "24volt" sounds cool, hehe

You plan to DD it? Or weekends? Or off-road ?

Congrats. Looks awesome. Be prepared to spend big on parts. Not that stuff breaks, I just keep adding. Spent another 1200 today.

First of all, thanks and hello. Secondly my 87 has a 6.5 in it. It was not common that year and the way to tell is the turbo casting at the rear of the engine. No mine isn't a turbo but it has the casting. As far as weight, spec says about 2500kg, I know my 2 ton jack did not want to lift it. Looking at getting a 3 ton trolley jack for the next time I work on it.

Compared to my jeeps, parts are a bit harder to get, I hate online shopping and it will take some getting used to it. I spent most of my life working with 24volts since it is used in industry and automation/robotics.

My vintage of Humvee had the one piece reservoir/pump so both had to be replaced. Newer ones have a separate pump, which is a bit cheaper to replace.

I just can't wait to get the safety and get on the road.....
