On sites like govplanet.com , vehicles are sold " for off road use only " I asked this site if these vehicles can be licenced for the road again....

Here is the reply...

They can be, that is a question for your DMV. Per our contract with the D.O.D. we can only create titles that state off-road use only. Please read the below information for what to expect when purchasing a humvee:

Thank you for your interest in purchasing a Humvee from GovPlanet. Please read this email thoroughly as it goes over everything you need to know about first time purchases for Humvees.

All Humvees sold on behalf of the government on our website require the purchaser to go through an extensive background check. This background check will require an End Use Certificate (EUC) and typically takes about 12 weeks for first time buyers. Please be advised that during this review period you will not be able to pick up your item; it will stay on site until your approval has been received.

You will be notified of your EUC approval via a letter from the DLA and through an email from GovPlanet. You can always check your EUC status in your GovPlanet account. This can be found in the buying tab in the section named “EUC Status”.

You will also need to fill out and submit a Hold Harmless Agreement, this agreement will be found in your account under your important user messages.

Unless specifically stated under item details, all Humvees sold on our site do not come with titling documents. As these items were owned and used by the government they were never titled. GovPlanet can create titling documents on your behalf.

There are two main titling options for you to choose from. The SF-97 which is a certificate to obtain title and costs $50.00. The Full Transferrable title which costs $150.00 and is issued out of Montana.

Please be advised of a few things: Both the SF-97 and the full Montana title will be issued as off-road use only. It will be up to your local DMV to provide an on road use title. Also, not all states accept the SF-97. We always recommend contacting your local DMV prior to making a bid as each local DMV will vary on what they will accept.

The turnaround time on receiving your SF-97 is 3-4 weeks and the full Montana title is 5-6 weeks. The start time on your documents does not begin until your EUC has been approved. Please keep in mind we are creating these documents from scratch so the process does take time.

<div style="font-family:'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Grande', Tahoma, Verdana, sans-serif;color:rgb(43,46,47);margin:15px 0px;">So , if I have read this right, the answer should be yes, as long as they meet DMV safety requirements.</div>

I would be surprised if there wasn't 100 US surplus HMMWV in Canada right now. My understanding is you have to be a us citizen to purchase these and receive a EUC from gov planted. Once it's sold to a citizen, they can do whatever they want with it, it is no longer Govt property as a EUC was issued and it was demiled. I own one and its no longer demiled but now a m1025 supplementary armoured (80% done). Basically, only bring a base model back. If you show up at the border trying to export it and it has armour or any other EUC items, it could be seized. A lot of HMMWV owners in the US mistakenly think that whoever they sell their hmmwv to, needs to get a EUC. That is false.

Also, Polar Bear, only issue I had registering it was it only has a 6 digit VIN vs a normal 17 digit Vin. Took the Ontario MTO maybe 30 minutes and a few phone calls to figure it out. Basically there was a motorcycle in Ontario that had the same VIN but they figured it out.

Thanks for clearing that up. Good to know there is a way to navigate through the hocus pocus bureaucracy......

I bought mine throug a guy in Oakville. Imported with Ontario ownership. It took me about six weeks to get it on the road and a few minor modifications. Keep in mind, mine is an 87, and pre airbag, ABS, BS. So you should be aware that the newer the Humvee, the more it may need to meet safety requirement.
