Winter Tire Law in Quebec and Hummers

As most of you know Quebec has made winter tires manditory as of Dec. 15th, 2008. While we all like to think that we are exempt, well guess what we aren't! The way it works is that if the factory size is available in a Winter tire then YOU MUST use them. That means that all H3s regardless of model or year must have winter tires and not just M+S but the Mountain snowflake badging. As for H2s, no manufacturer makes a winter tire in a 315/70R17 so technically we are exempt, BFGoodrich does make one in a 37x12.50 R17 that has the badging, but they cannot force you to use a size that is not OEM. For H1s, well hear there is a major issue, if you have 16.5 rims you are exempt since nobody makes a winter tire for these rims, but if you have 17" rims then you can use the aforementioned BFG. However, just so you know for those of us with H2s or H1s they told me that nobody would hassle us since we normally are the only vehicles moving in major snowstorms. <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... >/grin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';D' /> <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... >/grin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';D' />  Sadly H3s will not be extended the same grace...sorry guys! :'( :'(

This Info comes from the Police and the Tire Industry (My cousin is one of the heads of the Montreal Police and I have a buddy in the tire industry!)

Hope this helps!

I was wondering about this.  Thanks for the info.  I live in Sask. so it's not an issue for me, but its good info to have.  That sucks that you can't run M/T tires in the winter b/c the government said so.

Darn...I just bought a pair of 315/70/R17 s and noticed that they didn't have the snowflake.So I went  the size smaller to a 285/70/R17.Which is kind of bogus...because one looses about 2.5 to 3" in height.I love the stock height and really miss it...

now I'm almost an H3 !! :'( :'(

I can hardly imagine the police pulling me over in my H1 with MT/R's and citing me because I don't have a snowflake on my tires. <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... >/grin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';D' />

Actually my tire guy told me that if a Cop or the Road Safety guys decided to push it, that I should suggest that first I drive through an unplowed field and then they try and follow in my tracks....then when I HAVE to pull them out at least they'll get the message very clear!! <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... >/grin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';D' /> <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... >/grin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';D' /> <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... >/grin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';D' />

Just a quick update to the Winter Tire Law. The Government has included the following conditions since there are some difficulties with tire supply so here are the conditions.

Any words on the sidewall that say Arctic, Blizzard, Winter, Ice, Stud, etc. in other words anything to do with winter...duh!

Also they stated very Clearly that tires that Have Mud and Snow DO NOT QUALIFY AND ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE!!! BUT, and you'll love this, any tire that has LT designation IS ACCEPTABLE! So if you have mud tires they are no good but if you have slicks that are LT whatever then Bobs your Uncle! How DUMB is That!!! <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... lleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='::)' /> <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... lleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='::)' /> <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... lleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='::)' />

Also they have now made another category. Weight Rating. So if the vehicle is over 4500kg GVWR You are EXEMPT....but only if used for commercial or fleet if private then, you must comply with the law!

If you are between 3000kg and 4500kg you are exempt if it is used for Commercial but not for private, in other words you must have an F-plate or an L-plate no private plates!

And if that isn't enough they said that regardless of the above any infraction will be judge on a Case by Case basis.

Sounds like Nobody Knows Anything!!! <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... lleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='::)' /> <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... lleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='::)' /> <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... lleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='::)' />

Guess we'll just have to keep pulling cars, trucks and emergency vehicles out of snowbanks before they Get A Clue! <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... >/grin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';D' /> <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... >/grin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';D' /> <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... >/grin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';D' />
