I went one step further and decided to make a super side step. they now weigh 225lbs each and you can beat them to death and have no issues! At least I haven't and I beat the snot out of my H2!!! Take a look!

Welding it to the frame rail is a very bad idea. That would be like welding a tow ring to the frame. Any connection that is suspect to a shock load should be bolted. Its 4x4 101. Look at any tow rig, professionaly built offroad rig, or semi wrecker the tow points are bolted to the frame not welded. 10.9 Bolts and Grade 8 bolts have a much higher sheer force rating than any weld. Notice skyscrapers are bolted together.... (Structural Design and Metallurgy where part of my College Engineering Courses.) In fact if you look at large semi rigs or even at the frame of an H1 the major sections are bolted together.
The threaded bolt holes in the frame are connected to both sides of the frame rail. If you welded this onto the outside of the frame rail you would loose a ton of strength.

never weld on a frame .you weaken the frame.frames are heat treaded harden steel.heating from welding changes that!!!!!!!!

Very bad idea!!! TWO VERY COOL MODS THOW i like them!!

Welding heat treated metals does change the properties in certain metals. valid point, but have you ever noticed that the frame rail is boxed and welded together from the factory? Also due to the low amps it would take to weld the spacers to the frame and the welds being over a small surface area it will not affect the frame rail.
My H2 is lifted and the rancho crossmember that hold the torsion bars I welded to my frame rail because the bolts couldn't hold it. I wheel alot and have the stress of the torsion bars on the crossmember plus the weight of the bars and it has not budged and has been like that for about a year and a half. I went to welding school and metal fabrication school also, that is where I welded the crossmember under the instructions of my teacher who is a welding supervisor for a Aerospace company that build parts for jet fighter, that's how I know it is safe.
