I have 138,000 miles and just had to replace the engine. The engine was still strong but had a rod knock after a wheeling mishap. I believe that engine would of hit 200,000 miles easy, but you wanna play you got to pay.

How it happened that You damaged Your engine with rod? Did You do offroading? And how much does it cost to replace engine?

I stalled the truck in about 5 foot of water, the water went up the tailpipe and cracked the cat converter. I didnt know the cat was cracked and drove 4 hours home and took it to a engine shop who diagnosised the cat but said it was safe to drive the 10miles home. I got 3 or 4 miles down the road and the cat completely clogged and the backpressure made oil blowout the dipstick tube. So to make along story short if the engine shop told me to tow it home I would of spent $175 for the tow instead of $3300 USD for a engine. On top of the engine I had to replace the cats, and figured I might as well replace everything wrong with the truck. I spent around $4000-$5000 in total but everything that was wrong with my truck I fixed and it is like new again.

What a bad mistake they did in dealership! Because of them You finish your engine! Did they reimburse some money to You?

Bigger question I have is: could you have replaced your engine with the 6.2L from the newer models? I've been pondering that; I'm an oppurtunist, if I can go bigger, I will.

Hmm, if you were to go with the 6.2L, why not run the 6-speed tranny while you're at it?

The trans on the 2003 H2 is suspect. Its a 4L65E. Its bascially the same transmission they put in most rear wheel drive GM vehicles except it has 5 pinions instead of four taking it from a 4l60e to a 4l65e. It really is underbuilt for the truck. However a rebuild should not cost more than $1500.

The engine is a pretty solid design and should last easly 200K.

I would LOVE to put a 6.2 in my 2003 and the 6 Speed is a much better trans. the new six speed is based off of the 4L80E that is way more heavy duty. They call the six speed a 6L80E. What they did was change the 3 gear ratios in the trans and then gears 1 and 2 also work in conjuction with the overdrive unit to give you 6 gears.

I think the perfect H2 would be a 2003-2007 with the 6.2 and 6L80E. That way you get all that power and still have the 4:10 gears.

I would love to do a duramax conversion but the cost and amount of work involved it just insane.
