Hey Wrecker, I just purchased an H3 myself and am taking delivery tomorrow, so I just went through this same process myself.  First thing I can tell you is that the Canadian economy ratings are extremely optimistic, and that the current American economy ratings have gone through some positive changes recently to improve

their real-world accuracy, so they are, in my opinion, as accurate an estimate as you can get today.

Going by the American numbers, the I5 on regular gas gets 14mpg city, 18mpg highway, 16 combined.  The V8 gets on regular gas 13mpg city, 16 highway, 14 combined.  Thedifference is pretty mininal, but myself I went with the I5.  My summer car gets 15mpg combined so I knew what it was like on the pocket book before I bought the Hummer, it's not as bad as you might think.  $70 - $80 / week to fill my car going back and forth to work, I expect the H3 to be the same.  Up to the buyer to decide if that's reasonable

or not!

Congrats when you make the purchase!

I can give you some very good input as I have had both for the 5cly and the 8 cyl....

DO NOT BUY THE 5Cyl !!!!!!  You will HATE it!  I bought a 2007 H3 and although I loved it - power was extremely lacking. Gas mileage was ok but there is no way I could even pull a small trailer. Then offroading - it just didn't perform. I then traded it in for a 2008 H3 Alpha with Adventure package. This has been my baby for the last year and a half and I absolutely LOVE IT!  Gas mileage is a smidgen worse that the 5 cyl - but for the extra enjoyment and being able to tow 6500 lbs makes it well worth it. Offroad this thing is amazing as I have a small lift and 35" tires on it. I also added a high flow filter and a magnaflow exhaust so in the end I think my mileage is better than the 5 cyl.

I am relectantly selling mine now ONLY for the simple reason that I bought as H2 as three kids do not fit very well in the back. If I had 2 kids.... I would have my baby until the day I die I think!

Hope that helps!

^^^ Ouch Dave... that hurts, I love my 5cyl  :'(

But yeah, when I test drove the 5cyl with the auto it was a dog. If you go with a 5cyl the manaul is the best choice, it feels like a totally different vehicle with much more power.

Is the dealer using the Metric MPG system by chance? I never understood that, it is very misleading... either use the Canadian L/100 system or the US imperial MPG system... they purposely try to confuse people by substituting in the metric MPG system which has much higher numbers.  <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... /angry.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='>:(' />

Anyway, back on track:

I bought an H3T this summer, it has the manual transmission and the 5cyl. I took it on a road trip from Calgary to Vancouver. My highway mileage returned an average of 23 to 24mpg (imperial mpg) with use of the cruise control.

According to this website http://www.fueleconomy.gov the official numbers look something like this:

2009 H3T (5 cyl w/ manual)

City: 14mpg

Highway: 18mpg

Combined: 16mpg

2009 H3T (5 cyl w/ autol)

City: 14mpg

Highway: 18mpg

Combined: 16mpg

2009 H3T (V8 w/ autol)

City: 13mpg

Highway: 16mpg

Combined: 14mpg

(or in L/100)

2009 H3T (5 cyl w/ manual)

City: 16.8L/100

Highway: 13.1L/100

Combined: 14.7L/100

2009 H3T (5 cyl w/ autol)

City: 16.8L/100

Highway: 13.1L/100

Combined: 14.7L/100

2009 H3T (V8 w/ autol)

City: 18.1L/100

Highway: 14.7L/100

Combined: 16.8L/100

So mine actually achieved much better than the window sticker: HOWEVER I have a theory why... typically a manual transmission gets better mileage than an auto (more gears, tallers gears and drivers can run the engine at lower RPM's than the auto). However being that only 3% of H3T's come with a manual I think that GM just slapped the Automatic mileage on it.

Anway, hope this helps. Just watch out for that Canadian MPG... pay attention to the L/100 which is the official measurement of mileage in Canada.

Yeah the stick shift is tough to find, admittedly I wasn't planning to do towing or hauling... when I picked it up, I bought it just as a toy... and occasionally something to get me to work in deep snow.

EDIT: You are correct, it is an Imperial measurement, not metric... which makes even less sense. I am sure that Canadian dealerships use it as a way to confuse people with the US gallon which is the standard measurement of mileage in South of the border.

So Converting from a standard US MPG (24mpg) to the Imperial MPG I was getting close to 29mpg.

Sugar - I bow down and prostrate myself before you....  <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... lleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='::)' />

The 5 cyl. is pretty good in a stick shift, but I must admit - I'm too old for a stick shift!  And yes - I tow a 5000 lb trailer with mine and I can even accellerate up hill.....

But - I wish I had an 09 Alpha as I would like those stock front lockers!!
