If anyone is using an aftermarket intake on their H3 (K&N, or whatever) and has any pictures I'd love to see them. I've been thinking about getting one but sucking water through the intake is a big worry. And washing under the hood is another problem entirely... but I think you could be careful enough to keep the water away.



A pre-filter can keep some water out but if you get a nice wake through the grill on the filter, no pre-filter is going to protect you from that, but I just cannot find a picture good enough to tell how the filter is positioned!



It looks like it might be positioned away from the grill and away from most the danger, but again I just have a hard time telling.



Maybe someone knows of a better off-road oriented intake kit?

I would think long and hard about a K&N or any other intake that is "open box" design... like you said splashing of water and mud while offroading is a serious concern and they offer little to no protection against that...

I would highly recommend an air doc intake, it replaces the stock tube but keeps the OEM enclosed box around the filter...

I'm with Dan...Do NOT USE AN OPEN ELEMENT FILTER HOUSING ON A HUMMER!!!



For the best results for an H3, Get the ARB Snorkel...it will mount your intake high and dry and give you a true cold air and ram air intake. Use this with the factory housing and a highflow filter and replace the restrictive pipe from the filter to the throttle body and Voila you have the best intake system possible!!

It is too bad they don't have something a bit less restrictive on the market as far as snorkles go, looking at pictures of the Safari snorkle up close it looks like it would not be able to perform as well as the OEM box.



Ideally you would want a smooth one-peice pipe with maybe a minimum of 3D (3 diameter radius) bends in it to give the best results.



That or just stick a pipe up through the hood with a filter element on it like a lot of heavy equipment has. <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... iggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I gotta say I'm just not sold on the snorkel... not that I doubt it's purpose but I find they look a little awkward running up the windshield and I'm not quite adventurous enough to need one (yet!).

There's this Volant intake out there with a lid on the box that seems like it'll do the trick, plus a pre-filter for the trail and I think you'd be in business. Some kits have their Powercore filter (some weird proprietary filter) and some a reusable cone, and I cannot find for the life of me find which the H3 kit uses! I'm not feeling this Powercore filter at all and for me the cone is the only way to go. It would appear that the cone filter is used but I'll have to call them for the goods!

The Volant intake is a great choice...as long as you aren't going over the hood...Keep your factory airbox just in case since the ARB Snorkel only works with the factory box!!

k&n now makes a flat air filter that is a direct replacement of stock air filter. no mods on H3 <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... ght_on.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':right_on:' />

Air doc all the way it removes the useless plastic resonator between the throttle body and uses the existing airbox. Much cheaper then KN cai.
