Re-Gearing

Ok, I was thinking I might want to re-gear my truck. Currently on the highway to maintain 110km on any kind of gently slope or wind I pretty much have to sit in 4th gear and downshift to 3rd when passing or getting into steep grades. 5th gear is what I like to call my 150km+ gear... because unless I am going that fast or on a downhill it starts to lose speed as soon as I shift into it.
Meanwhile when climbing steep hills slowly I am constantly having to switch to low range when everybody else is perfectly fine in 4H.
Bottom line is that my gears are all way too tall in almost every situation I can think of.
So I was thinking about re-gearing things a bit to try and make it more drivable. I think that would ease up pressure on the engine and transfer case as well.
How do I tackle something like this? Is there a direct swap I can do for the differentials? Currently I have 4:56 gears, I need something lower than that for sure.

PM Kevin (Polar Bear) as he is a Hummer Tech and he would be able to answer your question. He talked with me about my front diff. and re-gearing it when it exploded on me.

I was doing some calcs and reviewing what is out there, pretty much 4.88 gears is what I would be looking for.

Your SOL sugar. The biggest you can fit in the front 7.63" carrier is a 4.56 gear. They don't/can't make a 4.88 for it, it don't fit. I get guys with Alphas whom have 4.10's stock upgrading to the 4.56's because that's all they can do. Chances are someone somewhere will figure out a way to stuff a 4.88 in by grinding or trimming something down but as of rite now you got the lowest you can get.
Now if you got a Base H3T then I got a fix for you that you will like a lot but if you got the adventure already you got the best thing available off the shelf.
There are 3 people now that have swapped in a D44 to the front. One is in CA too. Only thing is they say "swap" in because I think it's easier to say. They should say "custom fabricate" in because that's what they have to do. I know the one guy that sells the custom D44 but I think you still need to get your own gears or something. Last time I checked he was selling them for 3500$. The other guy I know of made his own and then the 3rd guy I know of purchased it for 3500$ form the guy that's selling them. It's been tested hard for a year now and holds up great but for 3500$ you can buy 2 completely assembled brand new with GM warranty front carrier with locker and cast iron pumpkin.
Thats the only option you have unless you have a base model... do you?

I do have the adventure package, that kind of sucks there is no way to get 4.88 gear into the front one <img src='

So... can I get a 4.88 gear set into the rear dif then?

Yes but the front and rear have to match... Or you could make the coolest youtube video in the world!
Jokes aside. This is with anything, the front and rear gears of a awd/4x4 system have to match. If they don't they will be moving the drive line at two different speeds and you can imagine what happens in the middle. This goes for 4wheelers and sideXsides etc..
Now there is 1 way to put different gears in the front and rear. In fact the new caddy suv has different gears in the front than the rear. But it makes up for it with different size tires in the back and front. The rear tires are much bigger like a old hot rod. For ever (x) amount of rotations the big tire does the little tire does more but the little tire is on a different size gear. If you were to add up the rear tire size and gear, then add up the front tire size and gear they will equal the same ratio.
The only thing I could suggest trying is smaller tires all around or loose some weight. You may also be able to fix the issue somewhat with different shocks but that would be the last thing to try. Always remember, theres no replacement for displacement.

LOL!! I can just picture the truck with 38's on the rear and 35' in the front <img src='

Yeah I know the front and rear gears need to match, but if I could get away with just re-gearing the rear then I could do something different in the front. I might start to look into a Dana 44 swap a bit more, any idea if I can re-use the E-locker?
