BUMP!
We need to get back on this JL... I've been doing good so far, got an X-Jack, electric impact, massive breaker bar & zap straps!
A few things I am going to look into is getting an extra accessories belt, once of those battery pack things and a whole bunch of extra bolts, washers and nuts of all sizes relevant to the truck.
Tie rods are still a big one, I think we really need to split the cost of getting an extra one in case one of us ever snaps it on the trail.
One last things is we need to figure out a plan in case the steering rack goes so we can make it tow-able. I am thinking that if worse came to worse we could rig something up with tie downs to at least stabilize it.

I picked up 2 of those electric impacts for $25 each at CT... they are awesome! I used them all year to put my racing tires on and off for autocross, also on the trail to replace other peoples tires... always a big hit when they see how well they work!

Yes, I've been learning with Karl and myself that having extra bolts along of various sizes is a MUST!! I needed one and he's needed a couple so a very important thing to have.
As for impacts... not important to me. I have a big ass strong arm that I use when rusted on. I tried even an air impact gun as well as electric and they didn't budge it! it's amazing the torque you can get on a long strong arm... Plus ten you cut down what you have to bring...
tie rods would be a good idea! I should have kept my stocks one when I upgraded my front end for a spare...

It was nice as it was a fairly easy fix and goes to show you how quickly we can get a rig going again as long as we have the spare parts to do it with...

HOLY CRAP DUDE, SPARE CVs ON EBAY!!!
CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP!!!
They're salvage off an 07 so I believe those are the smaller CVs whereas we have the bigger ones... but still a good spare eh? Two for sale and I already got one on order!! One left get 'em while they're HOT HOT HOT!! Sure as hell beats $600+ from the damn stealership.......

That makes me feel a little better since out of all the spare parts the CV was definitely the biggest $$$ item by far...

Dude, for a field repair, you don't want a spare CV joint, you want to have the entire drive shaft. I remember replacing a CV joint and it took hours and you need to have more tools with you ( C-clamp spreader ) whereas the entire shaft can be replaced in an hour. I was amazed how easy it was...
They're not that much, I paid $190 for mine from Nappa, and yes I'm sure the dealership would be more like $800 for the exact same part...
They run without a shaft and I hope the H3's are the same that the end coming out of the differ is sealed that the shaft bolts on to... so a quick field repair for me now is what I did last time and simply remove the defective shaft and then drive out in low so I can lock the rear diff.
Just thinking on that alone as seeing how you can't lock yours... that LSD would be a good safety feature as well... I locked the rear a few times when heading out that time we went back in as I had nothing in the front...

Yes in my excitement the precise details were lost... lol. But it is indeed a complete front axle! For under 200 bucks including shipping is a freakin steal... I looked back at my notes and dealer cost +10% was $660!!! Then GST and you're darn near $700 which is just so far beyond unbelievable I cannot even describe!!!!!!!! At the old parts store we used to just call the entire assembly a CV so it's stuck in my brain now...
I found there are actually part numbers for every component on the front axle, so if it ever goes I figure the spare will be fine until I can get the original one rebuilt/repaired or whatever for much less than $700........ <img src='
