Thinking about another H3

Post by Sugarphreak »

Was kind of throwing this idea around today, our current daily driver lease is coming due and I am giving it to my mom who desperately needs a new vehicle. I am also doing a ton of home renovations which is costing me an arm and a leg and spending a whole bunch of dough isn't going to be an option.

I noticed used H3's are not all that expensive, and that it is feasible I might find an 08 Alpha for around the 20K mark. Even one on Kijiji locally right now for 25K. I've also been considering grabbing one from the US.

Thoughts?

I think it would be a great idea . You know the Rig inside and out . You get a lot of Rig for the money . Don't' go any bigger then 285/75/16 tires . Power, gas mileage , handling etc . Plus you have your monster H3-T as your main toy . Keep your eye open for one that already has the roof makers on it and brush guard . You might get lucky and find a Tactical Edition . Crank your front 1.5 as i know you will . Just pick up the Skyjacker extended hydro/nitro . Their like $220 for all 4 . I love them . Just a idea .I just picked up rear crossed drilled rotors and ceramic pads for $198 . I still have a lot to do to my Rig . Here is a few pics of mine with the above mods . Give you something to use as a guide /comparison .. Yes or No's for you . More mod's to come tho

"T" is definetly for Toy in my case. If I were to get another H3 the only thing I would change is probably the fog lights from white to amber. I'd probably stick with the OEM tire size as well.

I am trying to decide if an H3 is a viable dialy driver or not

The Alpha is definitely the H3 to get...however, if you're gonna use it as a daily driver, it will probably use a bit more fuel. The 3.7 might be a better option for you. Power is pretty decent. And the prices will be quite a bit lower.

PS: I would still get the Alpha though

As a daily driver I'd say they'd be a good choice, the only real headache is parkades... not that they're overly tall for most parkades but the windows are so narrow that I used to have to get out to get a ticket from the meter!! Other than that minor annoyance... overall I'd say mine was good to me!

As mentioned and as I'm sure you're plenty aware already... gas mileage does suffer with big tires so stock would be the way to go! Especially with the automatic. Overall you lose like 1mpg with the V8 I think? Which is like what a 3% decrease in economy?? Not sure what the current market is like but when I bought mine the price difference between the 5cyl vs. 8cyl was like $10k... Much like going from a 2007 to 2008 H2, huge jump in price!! While not a fast vehicle by any stretch I always found the 5cyl to have acceptable acceleration so in my mind the V8 would be a nice to have but not a need to have.

Quick edit... just saw this nice looking 08 at Shaw! Nice looking interior, got the Monsoon stereo (much nicer sounding than the stock H2 system I must say), roof markers, good mileage and good price to boot!

I don't know about another 5cyl, that is the one thing I don't really like about my truck... no power on the highway. Automatics are even worse for power, that is why I was thinking about the V8 instead. This is going to be my future road trip vehicle too, so it needs more power.

There are a few Alpha's around right now:

Anybody notice the extra fog lights in the white one

My lease is due in September of this year, so I have to get a new car probably mid summer. I am hoping a few more of them show up.

Yup ! That's GM'S grill mounted " Off Road lights" .They are 55 watts each . Not to many Rigs have them . You will have a button in one of those 2 slots underneath the fan power controls . They come in silver and black . They are around $450 from GM parts AND ARE GETTING HARD TO GET . Just like the Roof Markers , which this Rig has also . So wow ! Pus, a V8 and rear veiw camrea and factory Brush Guard , which will do the job . That's a very nice H3 there . I would think you would be very happy . I know i would !

Ok Rhino is an Alpha and is Kevin's only ride so it's ok as a daily driver. I suggest changing bumper to The ARB unit ask Tony he got them under a grand ,even without a winch its way more durable than the GM plastic bumper ( and cheaper too.) The change from P265's to LT285's has little effect on gas milage however do change to k&n stock replacement air filter. additional plus is you know the truck already.
