I was thinking they were what I would call spider gears in the diffs. But that I would think would be like 3 small ones and 1 large one per diff?

Nice guess.
If it was a regular diff, there would be 2 spider and 2 side gears all at about a 45' gear cut.

This is a special application for the torson 1 diffs. It is similiar to a old Toyota diff.

This diff has 3 side gears and one centre gear per axle shaft. Model year up to including 98.

Once the BTM has been used a lot, the gears wear and will give a problem similiar to brake chatter.
