Fuel octanes and what supplier ?

Post by johnnyspikesH3 »

Hey folks.I was curious to know what Fuel octane level and supplier that some of you use ? Experiences etc . For instance my 3.7L preferre's at least mid grade, for better mileage , and smoothness . Esso, and Petro seem to be the right combo for me ! I use to use shell , but i have never used it with my HUMMER yet . Reason Shell gas was doing some crazy stuff on GM vehicles with the idle and the speedo jumping up and down at idle . Yes the speedo and the gas gage .It was pretty wierd stuff . I Experienced this with my Cobalt back in the day . The dealer had tones of vehicles come in for the same reason . They tracked it down to Shell gas . Just curious on what the H2 H3 guys are using . What's working what's not ? Thanks for any input .

Hmm that is weird about the Shell gas.. I use Shell in the H2 and did as well in my H3 and no real issues. I put Shell in my G6 and Mustang as well and again both run well on the stuff! I have a supercharger on the Stang and have found that it really does run best on the Shell, she's a temperamental old girl and will let you know if you've got a bad tank! Safeway premium oddly enough seems to run pretty well but the other stations not so much! H2 doesn't seem to care and will happily drink whatever I fill with... but overall it's Shell regular grade all the way.

What I have learned about gasoline... which is admittedly not a heck of a lot... is that the top tier spec gas may be better for a motor. In Canada the stations with top tier are Shell, Esso, Petro-Can, Chevron and Sunoco so I at least make it a habit to fill up at Shell or Petro-Can since that's what is local.

Once a year I like to do the Seafoam treatment which will make most cars belch blue smoke as it clears out all the crud in the motor, and on my cars I get a few puffs of smoke but nothing too spectacular. Whereas when we do a vehicle that fills at the discount stations they have some pretty epic amounts of crap coming out of the tail pipe! Not a scientific test by any stretch but it seems like filling up at a top tier station might actually help the motor run cleaner so that's what I stick to. Image

shell gas messed up my fuel gauge in my old 2001 dodge 1500 pick up ...found out shell put a additive in there fuel that was messing things up ...when i talked to there customer service I was told to go to my dealership and they had a open account and would repair my truck free of charge ...they did and the guy at dodge said they did alot of them already ....so I know they have fixed the issue with the fuel but I just dont use shell now because of what happened. I only burn premium in my H2 (tuner is set for premium settings) and i always fill up at costco , cause its cheapest place here I find , but the only thing I put in my motorbike is husky premium cause its 94 octane.

i usually use either Esso or Shell..... I didna know about that previous issue with Shell though... Esso seems to run fine. I like the seafoam as well but i do it each oil change which is probably overkill.

does anyone in Calgary know where we can get racing fuel? wouldn't mind trying mixing a bit of that in and see how she runs. i must admit that my baby does run better on premium....

I use cheap gas... it is what the truck is rated for and any gains from premium fuel for vehicles rated for regular are really just a placebo affect at best. The 3.5L and 3.7L engines are not running compression anywhere near where you typically would need a mid or premium fuel.

There is actually slightly more energy in regular fuel than premium as well, so most people will get a touch better mileage using it. I also did some testing with my Honda Fit one year to see if this was true and it worked out to a 5-7% better efficiency with regular over premium.

This isn't to say that if you have a vehicle that requires premium (or if you have tuned you engine for premium) you should switch to regular. The entire purpose of running higher octane fuel is to delay the combustion under pressure so engines running extremely high compression won't get pinging (usually turbo and supercharged vehicles).

Bottom line, run what you owners manual recommends. Really Premium isn't really premium at all...

I also use regular gas in mine, from Petro Canada. Tried med and super, but didn't really noticed any difference other than a bigger gas bill.

By reading this , I see that some had fuel gauge problem with Esso or Shell. I don't know i fits coincidental but in my 06, my 09 and even my 10, after a while the gauge stop registering FULL,it goes only between Full and 3/4. is that something to do with the gas? I cant see why it would affect the gauge. in any case in my 2 previous H, the gauge got changed twice, and now on this one i will take an appointment to get it fix again sometime next week. I normally fill up slow so that there is less air in the tank and I stop at the first release.

Anyone else had this problem with the H3?

Ya my pops has been in the fuel industry all his life and has some close friends at the petro can production plant here in town and they told him little while back to burn premium , only because of the added ethanol in regular gas now (E10). Said they were finding out E10 fuel was causing issues in older cars and smaller engines with corrosion in fuel tanks , fuel pumps etc ...and E10 has a shorter shelf life then premium and in the summer my truck sits at times for weeks , as i ride my motorbike alot. Im super paranoid about my truck , as i want to keep it forever lol ...so for me its a personal choice to burn premium , makes me sleep better at night lol. And I know both regular and premium have the same in terms of heat energy but my truck runs alot better off premium , not so sluggish off the line.

Thanks my brothers . Excellent input , and advice . I think i might start trying Shell again since they revamped their formula, as has been stated here . Always good to keep your options open . Especially if you are on a long trip and the only gas station around is the one that you don't use anymore because their gas made you previous vehicle act like it was a tweaker meth head .

Mine still registering up and down,, it like its unadjusted, when thank is full it register between 3/4 to full, but when I get to red line empty, i can put only 60ltr, so still have plenty left. Same thing happen with my 2 previous H3 and its not because of offroading, since , my 09 barely saw dirt. as I didn't have it long enough for that before I trade it in for my 2010
