I learned something interesting yesterday that i was aware of but didn't know it was a common thing on 6.5 diesels. I was told from a 14 year veteran e-test guy we had a fleet of trucks to e-test and one truck which is a 2001 3500 hd. He warned us this truck is ready to take off and usually when it does there's no stopping it. The easy way to tell if your 6.5 is ready to take off. Pick a rpm like 1500 and push the fuel pedal and you can't get the rpm's to stop where you want it. This could happen to you and there is no stopping it until the motor grenades. The fix 100% of the time is injector pump. There is only one way to kill the motor once it take's off is to have the air filter off and spray it with a fire extinguisher. Something to pass along if you have any friends with a 6.5 and i'm sure all you H1 owner's.

Seems like the 6.5's have a few small issues. However it is still a great motor!

IF THIS EVER HAPPENS TO YOU TURN THE KEY OFF THE ENGINE WILL STOP.

YES THIS IS A INJECTOR PUMP FAILURE

NEVER SEEN A ENGINE GRENADE FROM THIS BUT ITS POSSIBLE IF NOT TURNED OFF?

This ussually happens to Ford 6.0 diesels when guy overrun them and never change out the air filter.

What happens is the restricted air passage causes the turbo oil seal to fail or suck out and once oil for the turbo makes it into the intake it burns as fuel. Once out of oil, the engine siezes with a big bang. Turning off the truck has no effect!!! The engine will continue to run at the highest possible revs. Most diesels will throw a crank or wrist pin before the engine runs out of oil. The one thing you can do is spray a fire extinguisher into the intake until it stops.

So most of you are thinking gee i need and oil mist spray on my intake to increase power LOL

As you can see the engine can go for quite a while at way higher revs than normal. Imagine a Hummer H1 running at 5400rpm. ussually something will bend!!! Does provide the oppourtunity to recycle your used engine oil <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... oflmao.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':rotflmao:' />

Would a positive air shut down prevent something like this?

They are mandatory for any diesel trucks out here in the oilpatch, if there is ever a release of toxic/highly flammable gasses (namely H2S: Hydrogen sulfide) any diesel engine will take off until it blows itself apart. It's hard on the engines obviously since you starve it of oxygen, but I'd rather have my engine crank a few extra times to start when it's safe or fix the problem that causes the engine to rev so high over a new block or rebuild.

Wouldn't you just pinch the fuel send tube to the motor? I have stopped my engine this way before when I accidentally bypassed my ignition. (don't ask! ha ha)
