Hi Guys,
I have a '97 H1, both my front tires are flat as they have a slow leak since I had the brakes done by mechanic.
I went to put air in them and the compressor is not working, its making a knocking noise...any suggestions? is it toast?
do I have to tow it to the mechanic? Is it something I might be able to fix myself, or replace? I would appreciate any feedback from any of you guys as I'm sure most of you have more experience than me...

Re: Dead built in compressor?
I can't be 100% sure without hearing it but odds are if it's knocking and has no output it's toast.
You don't have to get it towed. You just have to disconnect the ctis lines at the wheel hubs and inflate each tire the old fashioned way.
The OEM air compressors are crazy expensive but not difficult to replace.
I've heard of a lot of people modifying their air system to use Viair compressors. They are less than half the price and still a good quality.
I work in north Vancouver, I'd be happy to swing by and have a quick look at it for you. PM me.

Re: Dead built in compressor?
The CTIS compressor is around $1000 from AM General but they currently are on back order..
If you are filling the tires any it us still leaking, sounds like you have an issue with an air like, fill the tires and listen for a leak/hiss...Air Lines air are available, could also be the quick disconnects. .Best to fill and listen. Then as Kapman says disconnect so not to lose all air.
Pm me if you want an exact quote on a OEM compressor.

Re: Dead built in compressor?
If the air sound is coming out of the air breather intake, you need ctis internal seals.***Also check for loose spindle nuts(Axle will have play up and down, side to side.). Check compressor reed valves for debris as well as the 3 valves on the main ctis valve body. The quick disconnects are also trouble some. The Cepek lines and fitting are quite good, or you can use a aftermarket coupling .I do make my own lines and quick disconnect systems for 16.5,17 steel or alum 1 and 2 piece rims.Custom fittings for the Rockstar rims as well.
ARB does sell a dual compressor that works awesome. You can even use air tools from it via a small reservior.
Other than the compressor, I have all in stock without ordering them in or going thru customs.

Re: Dead built in compressor?
The ARB compressor setup is very nice, just saw one today that Phil had installed and a ton cheaper too then OEM...and faster to air up..and bit of custom work to get it in there nice in a 98 truck but the owner is very happy..

Re: Dead built in compressor?
I dropped by Diablo's house on my way to work this evening.
His compressor is running fine now. From the information I got from him, my best guess for the knocking sound was a malfunctioning solonoid. It was -10C the day the problem was occurring so I'm thinking one of the solonoids was frozen and the compressor was achieving max pressure. Thus creating the odd sound.
I located his air leak. It is from a crack in the side of the brass "T" that connects the left and right tires together. Super cheep fix but a little bit of a pain to get at.
