Advice for someone considering buying a Hummer

Hello everyone,

I am trying to decide whether to buy a H2 Hummer in Burnaby, BC. Is there any pros/cons that I should consider before buying one? I know I've heard that the Hummer is considered to be horrible for fuel efficiency, not really easy to find parts for, hard to find a mechanic that specifically specializes in fixing them. Yet there has to be something about them that motivates people into purchasing one. I'm also looking for someone to consult if it is mechanically sound and worth investing into. I know I sound wishywashy but I do want to purchase if not now but sometime in the near future.

First of Welcome to the Club!
 
Many of the points you listed happen to be myths.
 
Every Hummer gets about the same fuel economy as every other 2500/3500 gas pickup and large SUV...but the media point the finger at Hummer!
 
Parts wise, an H1 is harder to get the parts for but not an H2...most of the parts are shared with the GMC/Chevy 2500 and 3500 pickup so there are loads available!
 
Any mechanic that works on the aforementioned pickup can work on the H2...same components...just different body.
 
There are the odd parts that are unique to the H2, some are being discontinued but we can always find alternatives for most stuff!
 
ALL H2s have a factory rear E-locker.
 
I would suggest finding a truck that was a Street Queen, since it will be in overall better condition than one that was truly used as a Hummer.
 
2008-2009 have the 6speed transmission and the 6.2L engine and are very awesome trucks!
 
2005-2007 have the better mirrors than the 2003-2004 and over electronic doodads.
 
2003-2004 are the first generation.
 
 
The Adventure package H2s do have a cool rear air suspension that have a stellar ride but like every manufacturers air suspension is plagued with issues...when it works...it is awesome when it doesn't...well

The motor for most years is the 6L v8, which is in many Chevy trucks, so parts are everywhere ...

We use the dealership a lot for our h2, but really most garages should be able to work n it,..

As in general, I love the h2, it's a head turner, lots of power , most body parts dealer accessible ....

I'm sure tons of aftermarket places....I find hey drive well,nice an quiet,, and if you dare off-road ,can keep up with

I have the 09 with the rear air suspension system and the 6.2. Polar Bear is correct...same mileage as a pick-up with great power. The air suspension system crapped out at 50,000 KM which warranty covered, but this is common on all GMs with it. (some thing happened on a new Avalanche I owned in 08-09.) Parts and service are no problem. My truck is a "street queen" but that's what I bought it for. I have the H1 for the messy stuff.
 
In short I have had the H2 for almost 5 years and it has run flawlessly for 79,000 KM and not given me any real trouble. I would buy a new one in a second if I could, as it is awesome on the snowy roads and handles great while loaded with sheer luxury for the creature comforts  we all need now. 
 
Lastly...yes buy a street queen. Likely it has been looked after better than any pick-up.

Thank you for the great replies and I really appreciate all of your help. My original idea was to find a used affordable H2 hummer around 10-15k and slowly kinda chip away at any problems that I find with it( maybe one pay check a month)after paying it off.

I know that in the long run that will probably cost a lot more but I still kinda get a sticker shock feeling when I look at a "Street Queen" Hummer, I know at the back of my mind that the price reflects less stress for me in the long run and is part of owning an "exotic car". I had kept an eye on the local Craigslist ads in Vancouver, BC for H1 ads during the summer but kept hesitating when I saw a 40-50k price tag from private owners and even now looking at H1 ads at autotrader in different provinces, even one with a partially cracked blocked costs 40k.


I humbly apologize if I offended the owners of said Hummers if you are in this forum or if they are people that you know. I am just stating my viewpoint as a regular new guy trying to see if he could own one of these great vehicles.


So from what I understand from the replies, is that I could just get any mechanic who has worked or is familiar with GMC/ Chevy 2500 -3500 truck to see if the H2 I am planning to purchase is mechanically sound and I can purchase any parts from a GMC/Chevy dealer?

All good and all.... just invest in a good security cuz just like the Escalade, thieves want it big time.  Got mine stolen Oct 30, 2015 off the parking lot of one of the busiest shopping malls in Ontario.  Found 2 days later missing wheels and stereo system.
