Clutch mod, lol at my price point ;)

Post by Monk »

My motor always hit 220 before it would start to cool down to 200.

This is according to the lame factory gauge.

Always drove around 190-200 in the City Highway / 120 km it would want to stay warm.

Sooooo, I decided to pull out my fan clutch today.

I have the 4 bolt High flow pump..

I had the clutch and fan off in one piece and was able to remove it but it was tight pulling it up.

This mod is a night and day difference seriously for the for the hour or so it took me it's a well worth the labor easy job.

Now after the mod, it hits MAX 210-212ish before fan kicks and drops the temp.

I'm extremely happy. My fan clutch is the severe Duty Hayden clutch.

Now it is 2 years old but ran like every other clutch. Engine seemed hot before the fan would kick on normally.

Now it's crazy good! I just wish I would have did this couple years ago when I got it brand new.

As you can see from the picture I pulled the tab out and where it's sitting ,is where I drilled a hole down to make a slot so that top spring tab can actually go back into bed aluminum block.

I think I used a 1/drill bit, close to the edge and used a flat Sharpe screw driver, and wacked it down hehe to make room for the spring.

I do not have a finished picture but you can see where I drilled the hole below.(about 1/8" down) size of spring width.

Then hit( chiseled) down that little wall left after drilling with a thin screw driver.

Then the spring goes into that hole.

Dont look at that sealant, that was just my mistake ,I cleaned it and moved spring to my new spot to the right, and added a dap of the (right stuff) caulking

Just a little update,

How the hell didnt I do this years ago,

That small modification made the biggest difference ever!!

It's set up now at 5-10 ish deg cooler from the old max heat.

Going up hills, or fast on the hwy.

Now, on some long hills like hwy 6 hill, I can feel the little bit of less power when the fan kicks on as my motor is an NA.

But seriously no more temp issues. I dont know why Haden couldn't do this from the factory.?

Don't get me wrong I never overheated but I just never liked seeing my temperature is go high under load....

I get this Sunday off from work so I'm really going to do more testing;)

In that picture just above here the spring is sitting in the factory location.

The slot that I drilled is to the right of it.

I'd have to say 1/4"-ish over I kinda eye balled it..

So basically you are making the coil ring a little bit loser.

From what I have read in the diesel forms some people straighten then re-bend that little quarter inch tab at the end of the coil , ( that little bend will be smaller now.)but I did not want to mess with the spring so this was the next idea I came up with.

The thing I like about it is if I want to put it back to the factory spot I can as is coil end just comes up with a flat head screwdriver and a little bit of patience and prying.

This is an easy job, and for MEEE I noticed a night and day difference.

I think due to our rads being so far and on an angle.

This little tweak made a hugh difference for any loads it does.

The diesel forums has lots of info as well..

Ok this is finished, and running WAY cooler.

The middle line is a factory setting, now I have a groove line above it and below it because I did not know which way to go.

(It was a brain fart day)

But you can see where I moved it from the middle factory groove

So basically your trying to make the coil longer. About 1/4 " difference from factory. Dont go to much or your fan will stay on, hehe..

LOL my coil does not seem as round because I was debating on bending the coil end first.(gave that up fast, haha)

But the drill method was by far easiest for me.

This is the factory set up, (with spring removed from slot)BEFORE I drilled anything.

And basicly ,that spring is resting near the area you want it to sit. You can see the finished pic for the exact distance , but yes I'd say 1/4" for distance... from he original spot

Good info, might need to do this myself.. However first I need to fix a coolant leak at the reservoir, hoping that will solve some overheating issues.
