2013 Alberta X-mas Run

Post by Sugarphreak »

Well, it is that time of year again! The snow is falling, the temperatures are dipping, the stores are busy with holiday shopping.... yes, it is time for our annual Hummer Meet & Greet!

The Annual X-mas Run:
For those of you that are new, our annual meet and greet is a bit of a different format than our typical runs. We pick a road trip route which is off of the main highways, usually something scenic. This is a chance for new or potentially new members to come out and meet the club, check out some of the rigs, and see what we are all about without having to commit to an all out trail run. At the end of the route we meet up at a pub or restaurant for dinner.

The General Plan:
This year we are hopefully doing something a little special, most years our x-mas run happens mid December... however this year it is a bit early. The reason is because we are going to take Powderface Trail, which usually closes Dec 1st. As seen below:

Date and Meeting Point:
Saturday, November 30th
Parking area across from Cochrane Tim Hortons
9:30am, roll out will be 10:00am

The proposed route:
Starting at Cochrane, running down the old highway 1A.
Taking 1X to the new highway 1, hang a left back towards Calgary
Head up to the highway to the highway 40 turnoff (highway 40 = Kananaskis Trail).
Turn onto highway 68 (Sibbald Creek Trail) and follow that all the way to Powderface.
(The above takes approximately 1Hr - 25min)

Powderface Trail takes approximately 1Hr - 15min, however we will probably stop for a few times for breaks and pictures along the way.

Photo of how the road looks in the summer:

I've never driven Powderface myself, it is one of those things I've been meaning to do for years now. I wouldn't worry too much about the sign btw, general word of mouth is that the road is not too bad, just a lot of single track sections.

At the end of powderface trail, where it becomes highway 66... there is a right hand turn and a 5 minute drive that leads us into a campground area, which by my guess will be empty and has a good 2 feet of snow everywhere. Perfect for anybody who needs to use the facilities and to have a toasty fire for lunch.

From here we can head back down highway 66, into Bragg Creek... do dinner there, or if it is still early maybe head back over to Cochrane to grab some grub at BP's there.

Feedback?
Please, post it up!

As much fun as wheeling is without a garage I can fix what I break in I have to be very carful through Winter. Already have to replace a hub seal and looking to do that in minus whatever weather in the driveway sucks. Although I might be up for meeting you guys for dinner I'll just drive up in the Subaru.

If you need a garage you can use my place. I have a double bay open right now. Ditto on a place to stay!

This is more of a backwoods road trip than an all out 4x4, plus dinner... haha. Hopefully there will be some spots with deep snow we can go play in along the way!

Thanks Nick, if only you lived closer. I think you all should move to Lethbridge.
