Back Up Camera + parking sensors + LCD screen Kit for H3

Post by waqder »

HI Everyone

After searching the web for some time, I found this kit (back-up camera + 4 sensors + 7 inch LCD mirror clip-on screen) for only CND $112 + shipping + customs. Link is here (shipped from overseas)

http://www.chinavasion.com/product_info ... ew-screen/

For comparision, there is another link below in USA (Audiovox product from Amazon.com or Crutchfield)

http://www.best-price.com/product/audio ... 4800971/1/

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-3XzxScm1cF ... html?tp=83

What you guys think.

Now the only challenge is get a matching cheap installer in my area. I called and e-mailed a couple of places but the cheapest one is asking $200.

If you guys have any suggestion for a cheap AV installator guy in the greator toronto area, please let me know

Just a quick update to the above post. I did find a mechanic in New Market area who agreed to install it for $120 cash. It does take some time for wiring/installation (may be at least a couple of hours) so I guess this is a fair deal

So I ordered the kit, it will probably arrive in a couple of weeks from now. I will let you guys know how it goes.

I had also looked on E-bay, there are some low priced cameras and then LCD screens sold separately, I think you could also find very low priced sensors as well, but I didn't see a complete sensors + Camera + screen solution and I didn't want any compatibility/interoperatibility problems with the parts so I prefered that kit with 4 sensors and camera and screen.

HI collega

Your timing is good as I just had it installed last Sunday on my H3. So far I am happy with it although I didn't have much time (just 2 days) to try it.

A few comments.

There are 4 sensors in the kit, and they gave the drill bits for boring circular holes in the bumpers for each of them. But since the bumper is made of steel on the hummer, the mechanic didn't want to drill the steel (its hard to do and he was afraid that hole will not be perfect for the sensor to go in), he said that these drill bits were meant for plastic bumpers (like the ones on most cars). so eventually we found a spot just below the tail lights (on each side) that was made of plastic molding below the lights. They were not on the edge of the vehicle (ideal location), the bumper and the trailer hook extended beyond that spot, but that was the only way to put those things in easily

So he ended up installing total 2 of the sensors instead of 4.

For camera, we faced the same problem, we didn't have a nice spot to put that in, so what he did, is to put the camera in the plastic rectangular cap(cover) of the tow hook and ran wires to the inside by drilling a small hole in steel under the rubber lining in the trunk. It worked out O.K. The only thing is that when I have trailer and I have to remove the rubber cap, the camera will be hanging and not work obviously.

Other comment is on the monitor, it's huge and will cover the entire mirror, so its a replacement for the mirror. The surface is reflective and blueish. when backing up the image from the back comes up on LCD but when normal driving it acts like a mirror. Its not as clear as a real mirror but it works. Also it will cover the spot on the original mirror where it gives you the temperature reading and direction so to avoid that I slided it slightly towards the left to allow that portion of the original mirror to show up.

So far it hasn't rained, so I don't know how it is going to perform after getting wet.

The thing about the Chinese mechanic (in New market) who installed it is that he charged me $140 for installation. I was expecting $120 as originally quote by his friend but since I went through a contact (no direct communication), he took advantage of the fact and said that he had quoted $140 to the guy not $120 (that was not true)

Anyway, future shop wanted $200 for installation just for the camera, so I think, it still was not a bad deal.

If you live in north Richmond hill, you are welcome to come by and take a look yourself to see how it looks. Just PM me and we can set-up a time.

regards

Thank You very much,Hyder, for your informative answer. Right now I dodn't know what to do with that camera. I found another one:www.gadgetshack.com. It's rear wiev wireless camera with 3.5" monitor that could be installed like navigation on dashboard.Price is $150US+shipping. May be that one is better choice. What do you think?

Yes defenitely one day we can meet and exchange opinions and ideas about Hummers! Thank You for your invitation.

HI Konstantin

Sure. I have a few more comments on my camera set-up.

The other day I washed my car and the camera got very wet as a result, but it worked O.K after that, so I think its O.K. with rain/snow etc .

I don't like the reflective LCD screen though. In day light (especially bright daylight), its hard to make out. It is clear in the night though. I like the other set-up (3.5 inch LCD wireless camera) that I bought from Canadian tire for $150 for my van. I heard that sometimes it comes on sale for $99. The future shop guys installed it on top of my rearview mirror for only $99 and I think that is good set-up as you can easily check both the camera and the mirror at the same time easily without shifting your neck.

I think a dashboard LCD set-up is good too although you should check with the installer as the installation price of a given set-up can be more expensive than the set-up itself.

when they hear that you have a hummer, they jack up the price or may be its because of the steel bumpers

I also like H2 and my ideal is to have H3 and H2 (and if you have a third driver in your home, may be an H1 as well) .

Before buying H3 a couple of months ago, I thought that H2 or bigger SUVs are too big/ugly, but since I got the H3 and have been enjoying it, I have changed my mind. I got the TV size buyers remorse. As most LCD TV consumers think (accoding to some consumer servey) that bigger screen would be better. I would like to keep the H3 though.

May be when I am ready to buy, I will rent an H2 and try it for a day or so before buying.

How is your H2 in terms of gas. I think on my H3, I am getting around 18L/100km.

Also, where do you go off roading. Since you are in the same neighborhood as mine (north richmond hill), its would be interesting to know of any fun/scenic nearby spots

Best regards

Thank you for reply. Wow gas mileage for H3-18 litres per 100km it's a lot! At least more than I expected. I just bought my H3 one week ago so I didn't have enough time to check mileage properly.I recently made fill up and right now I am watching my gas cunsumption. For my H2 it's about 21-22 litres per 100 km. it depends on.I got 18 litres/100km on highway and 23-24 litres/100km in city traffic. It's a bit more in winter time. So I heard that H3 suppose to have 15-16 litres/100km. It's big mileage for 3.7L engine. But it's o'kay. It's Hummer! About Hummer H1 you are right! If I have more money and possibility I will go to US and buy from e-bay 2006 H1 Alpha yellow colour, slant back! It would be complete collection!

About off roading: I didn't do it yet. I don't have time and possibility for it yet.

This rear view camera I din't decide yet. I have the same concern: How it's possible to install it for less money.

I don't know which one to choose from. What is your opinion?

best regards.

HI there

I would go for the 3.5 inch wireless set-up or if yo have time, you can look through the ebay to buy the camera and LCD screen separately for cheaper price

If you want I can give you the number of the mechanic that installed my camera/sensors for $140. I think you can negociate with him for a cheaper price since yours will be without sensors and with a wireless set-up (so he doesn't have to run wires from rear to the front). I think $100 is a fair price for installation for such a set-up on the hummer
