Ugh... whole front diff came out of the H3 and it is TOAST! The stub shaft sheared right in half and the chunks got in the diff and effed up EVERYTHING... Honestly I am baffled to how this happened! Chunks and bits everywhere, not quit 'catastrophic' failure but it's toast. The housing is chewed up pretty bad on the inside as well so I am not going to try and salvage it. Spider gears in the carrier are broken off, ring gear held together somehow but is cracked and gouged...

I have some pics I will post up later, hunting for a diff at the moment... Found a few for sale but nothing that is an exact replacement, found a cast iron that would need to be re-geared to 4.56 but overall a decent price at $800 but would also gear set so a few extra bucks parts and labour there, and also a 4.56 geared aluminum diff with e-locker for 2 large... Anyway I need a diff and I need one sooner rather than later, so if you find one let me know!! Just weighing my options at the moment but need something fairly quick!!

Holy crap dude!!

But does this mean the transfer case is ok, or is it toast too? What about warranty? Isn't it covered?

I will keep my ear to the ground and see if anybody I know has something that might work. Maybe Rick has some tricks up his sleeve to get you the parts for a good price?

No idea about the transfer case yet... seems like it's OK since it's still shifting and not making any noises, vehicle drives in 2wd! Transfer case is coming out tomorrow so we will see... at the very least I'm gonna get that troublesome shift fork replaced with the aluminum one hopefully that's all it needs...

The bill will suck but honestly I am staying clear of Shaw... I know the guys in town and they will take good care of my wee Hummer and make sure she's fixed up 100%!

Eyeah.... I don;t get it! You weren't doing anything remotely difficult at the time for the diff to fail? You are a pretty easy going driver so I tend to wonder know how that puppy was sdriven before you got it?

Freak man... what happened to a nice easy going drive in the snow?<img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... #>/huh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='???' />?

Got a few pics at the shop this afternoon...

Root cause of the failure... HOW on earth did this happen I have noooooo idea. This is the stub shaft that broke. This thing is BEEFY so this really is a major failure......

Image

Diff on the bench! Broken stub shaft is sitting on top of the diff. You can tell that shaft is damn thick!! I will be wondering forever how this could have happened.....

Image

Tooth is gone!

Me and the mechanic both agreed this broken stub shaft is a head scratcher. That shaft split apart and sent chunks into the diff, and of course that chewed up every damn thing inside of it <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... ey-013.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':wtf:' /> Barely did anything to the H3 all day, then it just let go... and this the result! Just chalk this one up to fluke/bad luck....

My hunch would be that there was a defect during the manufacturing process so it may have had a weak spot (Or obviously had a weak spot) as that looks to be about an inch and a half thick.... that doesn't just shear in half for no reason..

I wonder if they used recycled metal? I'm not a metallurgist or what ever those guys are called but it looks awful funny to me...
