The reason behind this is that, despite the fact that our trucks are oversized and incredibly heavy and we have to buy the appropriate gear to recover ourselves, you will encounter situations where you may be pulled out by a wide range of vehicles and as such, you should also keep this in mind. The 3" strap had more elasticity to it, and as such we were able to take better advantage of the kinetic properties of a thinner strap. Had there been another hummer, or a bigger full-size diesel, or anything along that lines, Id have been able to use the 4" but the lil Jeep was not able to stretch it. Within a couple of tugs we were able to get my truck free, and everyone got back to having a blast.
Use kinetic energy to your benefit (like those killer KERR ropes - my next purchase!), and work harder not smarter. Appropriate straps for the appropriate situation & Vehicles.

Actually HESH is right! But what I failed to mention is the fact that my 52000lbs Super Yanker Strap is a Kinetic rope! No Matter how hard I have pulled somebody neither I nor they ever felt a hard engagement. Just a gradual slow down in speed as you get close to the maximum stretch. Then it depends on whether or not I have more momentum or they are more stuck! Normally I never have to pull more than twice! The Kinetic Ropes protect your frame and attachment points from harsh engagement and they really work!

Nice, I have masterpull's SuperlineXD Winch line on my rig, and Im very impressed with it, and wouldnt run anything else. Wow, lots of great info here... by the way, I do have an ARB Strap and I have never had an issue with it.. I have seen bubbastraps first hand and they are very odd looking but work great!
I would see Roy for some gear if you are local..he does have it all...
as for shackles, I use 3/4" shackle and I make sure it was made here in Canada or USA... I have never had an issue with those shackles, my recovery tool box was huge and I have scaled it back a bit to a 30' strap, a 20' strap, a tree protector, some chains, one snatch block, 30,000lbs, 4 shackles, of course a wrong winch, gloves, and the Hummer H1 pioneer kit...other then that I am good and will not weight my truck down more..this, in the past, as been able to get me out of everything I was stuck in... others carry more, and others carry less, it will be a personal preference on what you want.. I mean you could carry an entire trailer full of stuff when you offroad but I think it is always best to compare notes with others that you are going with and carry what you need...also some strap to make sure everything is Bungeed down so they gear does not bounce around inside your rig helps too..last thing you want is a loose shackle snacking you in the back of your head...
Good luck.. there are kits out there, I believe Roy sells a ARB one that pretty comes with everything a basic off roader needs.. no need to do over kill, also Mile Marker and WARN also both offer come kits too...
