Ball Joints

Post by Khamul »

G'Day Hummer enthusiasts....

Here is another question to throw out there for input (Mainly to "the Bear" as always...) regarding Ball joints....

Having the drivers side lower ball joint replaced with the better Moog one, and I was told that these are "pressed" inplace on the control arrm. Now due to time contrainsts, I am having my mechanic install it for me tomorrow as I don't want to have to worry about that on the trail as the boot is torn, also don't want grease in the water as the trails go through some..... Being that they are pressed in place.. is this something that the average person could entertain or are there specialized tools for this? My mechanic (although I trust him) made it sound like a big deal which means bend over when you come to pay....

I want to replace all the ball joints in time with the Moog ones (Would be nice to not have to worry about those little grease boots going as the Moog ones do not have that) but I'd hate to have to pay for someone to do it for me..... I swear mechanics increase their hourly rates when they hear you have a hummer.....

Any thoughts and input would be awesome!

Thanks.

I replaced the ones on my truck myself. You 100% need a hydraulic press to get the old ones out and new ones in. The ball joint removal tool from PA or CTC will not do a damn thing lol While your under there check your inner/outer tie rods it is a good time to replace those as you'll already have everything apart. Hope this helps a bit....

@^%^*!@%.... that's what I was afraid of.... Oh well, getting the one side done so I'll bite the bullet and do the other side as soon as I have a few more bucks...

Thanks for the input...
