So my little H3 is having some alternator troubles! The sound and squeak coming from it is just terrible, but the voltage is still fine.
Does anyone know if I can replace the bearings, or specifically where I can find out what bearing to even try to find? Replacement of the alternator looks more or less like an easy job but gotta save a few bucks where ever you can, you know?
Alternatively, does anyone have a line on an aftermarket alternator so I don't have to pay dealer price?
Thank you!

Re: H3 Alternator Rebuildable?
I do not believe they are designed to be rebuilt by consumers.
My suggestion would be to call Bowness Auto Parts as they have the best prices around by far and see what the price is for a rebuilt one and they will take your core on trade in so the cost is way down. 403-288-5444
I got my calipres there for only $65 each with core trade in!!! I couldn't believe it!
P.S.... here's you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9rgUWHiu3w
Isn't it funny how these hills look so aminous when standing there but look like nuffin in a video.....

Re: H3 Alternator Rebuildable?
Good idea, I will give them a call in the morning! I used to sell alternator rebuild kits at the old parts store but I have no idea if people actually do that on a new-ish vehicle...
By the way great video! It's true though stuff like that somehow looks so nasty as you approach it but watching from the other side.. not so bad!! The H2 definitely has quite a bit of extra clearance over mine...

It's amazing what a simple 2.5 inch lift will do.... I swear it's all you need out there....
So I called out of curiosity.... those things are expensive!!! $325 after $65 core charge at Bowness...
Nappa is: $436.39 with a $24.50 core charge....
Good to keep them honest. Nappa will give 7% off with AMA card but still not as good as Bowness auto parts....

It has to be the same as some other model GM that will be WAY cheaper!
Powermasters make awesome High output alternators that by far exceed stock quality!
Btw, don't waste the time changing out bearings, if they are making noise due to debris that has gotten in then chances are something else is on the verge of dying as well!!

Ah yes! Such an obvious point and it did not even occur to me...
Thanks for checking out those prices for me Dave! Sometimes I can weasel a deal out of Napa in town but I'm thinking they won't be able to come close to Bowness.. Thanks again!!

Lol well I do have a business... I'll just forget to tell them it's software business... So shh!
I actually just got one from Napa for $360 plus a 5 year wattanty, Ams people there who will actually warranty it for me... I figure no hassle warranty is worth the extra few bucks so I can wreck it every time now!!
Ps never mind thd spelling errors I am posting from my cell... !

Re: H3 Alternator Rebuildable?
OK Hummer experts... so the alternator is on the way for tomorrow but this evening I'm trying to tear everything apart so the new one I can just drop in tomorrow night. The alternator is fully detached, yahoo! But! Think it will just easily come on out though?? Oh no that would be too simple..
I think the big intake 'muffler' needs to come off, and the fuel rail has to come out to give the alternator enough room to squeeze through that opening? Does that even make sense?! The AC line runs parallel to the rad, so detached it moves somewhat and gives a bit of wiggle room, but the hard fuel line I'm not taking chances with to try bending it a bit...
Before I start this whole process... does anyone know of a trick to squeeze the alternator through that little opening?!?
