H1: Wheel Falls Off?!

Post by Smasher »

Posting this for slowbutsteady. We got a call tonight saying his front wheel just fell off..which we found really odd?! He said it just spun off as he was driving home. I guess before this, he had 2 flat tires..they went from 35 to 20, so he hit the CTIS to fill them back up and then they dropped from 20 to 5psi..oil blew out of the drivers side wheel and next thing he knows he doesn't have a wheel anymore. Not much damage done, and it has us(Myself, Gadgets, Bio) very confused..but we know there are some great H1 mech's on here and he wants to know what the hell caused this and is it something that happens often? :S We have never heard/seen this before..

Should be noted he was just driving down a city street, no wheeling happening at the time of this blow-out.

It is a problem with the H1's. You will probably need a complete hub assembly. The fix I have found is an alternative spindle lock nut.

What happens is that the nut , from vibrations, repairs.., become easy to spin and the little locking device cannot do its job.

The fix is either going to and expensive replacement nut or, I have found an in-expensive locking system. About $15 per wheel.

It consists of a solid nut and a spider lock washer.

Just for your info.....

I have 3-5 used gear hub assemblies in stock . Unless you want new at about $2000.

Also have about 100 locking nut assemblies.

PS: so far I have heard of 4 members with this problem. No injuries other than their wallets.

TC, Liam,someone out west,and yourself.

If a hub is needed , call my cell 519-801-0113, any daylight time !!

Sometimes you will loose oil first , so you think it is an outer seal gone.,Then once the CTIS seal is beat beyond sealing, you loose air pressure. At this point , or earlier, you should check your wheel for being loose. Jack it up and see if the wheel is loose on the spindle. If it is loose, call a tow truck and save 2g.

From what I see, you needed to change your hub oil anyway. Grey is water and oil mix. Black, greenish, good colours.

We will pass this onto him, as well as your number! thanks for the info, Roy. But, he is daily driving this..could this be why? Because hes putting more miles on then someone who would be taking it for off-roading only? And this is a 1999 H1 if it differes or not.

Maybe a little due to daily driver, but the replacement I have will not let go under normal malfunctioning.

Have to put an escape clause in the statement just in case. But should not ever undo.

If he wants to rebuild it today, waiting....... <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... #>/c-n.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':coffeenose:' /> <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... /wavey.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':wavey:' />

Crazy Canucks:

I lost air first. There was grey oil sprayed all over the wheel. I attempted to use the compressor to fill the tire. That didn't work. I figured it only blew a seal. I was not aware of the "spontaneous disassembly" problem with H1 clampnuts so a friend came to assist me in disconnecting the CTIS and filling the tires. That worked for 50 feet and then things went badly.

As I am driving the H1 daily and it is my primary vehicle, are there any other maintenance items you are aware of or spares I should carry? I would really like to properly maintain the H1 than repair it on the side of the road.

I currently carry a PDM, fuel filters, an ECM, and a full set of tools for roadside emergencies. I'll call you today if you are available. I'd like to get 2 geared hubs and a set of 4 locking parts. I'd like to rebuild all 4 geared assemblies on the vehicle so if you have seal kits and their associated tools that would be helpful. Its always good to if possible when truck ( or any vehicle)is on a hoist to do a shake rattle and roll test . That is put on gloves and grab and shake twist and thud wheels exhaust ect and look for drool ( ask any parent) bring these too mechanic's attention . A little inspection can save the world of hurt

H1 is back on the road without problems or leaks. I replaced the geared hub and the monster is running well.

shotgun: Yes. I'll be doing that every couple of weeks. I can see why so many H1 owners have a hoist. I'll be getting one soon. Special thanks to Canucks 4x4 for having parts in stock day before Christmas!
