Undercoating

Post by ChadB »

Hey guys, now that this harsh winter is over I want to clean up the H3 and get rid of all that nasty salt. In fact I'd like to keep it out as much as possible so I was thinking of getting it undercoated this summer. Are there any special prep or tips you guys can offer before having it done? I'm a little worried what happens if you trap rust or salt under the undercoating.

Thanks

Try not to get the dripless. Get the semi drip or straight oil, as it creeps into the corners . It will drip for a few days, but better than just wax coating the surface

You could consider a DIY project and save a bit of money and get perhaps better results. I do all of my own rustproofing including mixing the formula.
What i do is use old but not burnt transmission fluid. Dexron 3 to be exact and i mix it 50/50 with vaseline and lightly heat it on a stove top until very runny. I then add a small amount of acetone to the mixture and apply liberaly with a pant brush to all the underside metals. As a note of caution i avoid exhaust parts or anything that gets real hot as the mixture can burn if its wet.. The mixture dries to a patena that is very protective and stops all rust dead!! When hot it soaks into the smallest areas like penatrating oil.
Mine needs to be done again since winter but no new rust and my truck is 1997

I wrote a whole thread about undercoating, and the equipment I built for doing pro grade application, but I cant seem to find it, heck I cant seem to find any posts/threads more then a year old?

Key rule though, like Roy mentioned, stay away from the wax based stuff.. Its bad news!

I use "rust check pink" in the doors (was able to buy a 5 gal pail of it)
And a semi drip, oil based fluid for the frame and exterior bits.

Truck loves it! Any chassis surface rust has stopped

Give Nelson Garage a call, they use Krown products for rust proofing.
