Sluggish Acceleration Hummer H1 6.5 non turbo Diesel

Post by Skenth »

I have a 96 non turbo H1.  The weather has been cold recently (not sure if its related).  This morining, the truck starts fine, idles fine, revs fine on idle.
The problem i am having is that there is little or no acceleration in R or D gears when i step on the accelerator.  Seems like the acclerator isnt doing anything in D or R gears.  When i shift the truck in park and step on the accelerator, it revs fine.  The truck doesnt stall at idle or in D or R gears.
Any thoughts/Suggestions?  Anyone else had that problem.

Sounds like a torque converter to me!

Try it in low range to see if you get some power back.

Also, take a look at your transmission oil...might be dark brown or black!

Do not think it is the converter. No signs prior to the cold weather.

May be a frozen fuel system, try diesel anti gel (diesel 911).
Can you hear the fuel pump prime the system?
When did you last drain the fuel filter of water?
Could be a malfunctioning coolant sensor. Does she smoke at all? black,blue...

At first thought was thinking try anti gel also , and also see if fuel filter or shotty fuel pump ,might have water, aka ice in it,,

But as polar bear said could be tranny related also,

Can be so many things, hopefully nothing to bad

How would I check for water in fuel filter. I did wash the truck about 10 days ago (temp was +10) and it's been parked outside and recently the temp had dropped to -30. I haven't changed the fuel filter or drained anything since I bought the truck 2 years back

I'll try the fuel additive/cleaner and see if that helps.

As for transmission oil, it was changed a few months ago (dropped the pan etc)

No smoke on startup.

sounds like insufficient fuel pressure  lag while in drive....it would be enough for the idle but once there is a movement the pressure needs to be there....I would chk all fuel system and test the pressure. I believe I had similar issue with my 95 non turbo...

There should be a drain tap in the left front wheel well.If it is not seized, when lifted, fuel /water will drain from filter.

It still sounds like a frozen fuel or fuel pump
