I just blew my oil cooler (rust). Anybody know if it would be safe to bypass it for a little while, I'm thinking a week or so until I get a new cooler. No towing or long distance driving, 20 km max. My truck has been running at 220 F lately so that's why I ask. And yes this is the perfect opportunity to clean my rad stack.

Just make sure your bypass has no kinks and you should be fine!

I was just going to connect the two hoses together that normally go to the cooler. I think I can find the fittings I need easy enough.

I cleaned my stack last year, defiantly needed it,

Get 2- 90 deg fittings with a connector, or a short lenght of hose with ends on it

I think bypassing the oil cooler will be fine for a short time. I am actually going to install a bypass valve into my truck to remove the oil cooler from the loop at startup until the oil in the engine heats up and pressures stabilize.. I do a lot of highway driving and the oil takes way too long to get hot.enough for highway operation at 70-85mph. I find it takes a good 1/2 hour driving at 55mph to get the oil warmed up enough to be comfortable putting your foot down.
Heath had this issue with the Land Speed Racer and found that the oil wasn't coming up to temp until near the end of his runs at which time a performance increase was noted.. Once the oil heats up the engine will actually run very well at 3krpm and higher. Also nice hot oil helps strip the crap deposits out of the engine so it doesn't sludge up. IMO the 6.5 sludges up due to the low rpm averages folks run the their engines. If your one of those guys who keeps at 55mph its probably good to run in third gear from time to time to turn the oil and water pumps a bit to gets things moving around inside the engine.
