Which FUEL ADDITIVES to use?

Post by Skenth »

I'm sure this topic has been discussed in the past but I wasn't able to find the thread. Can anyone recommend fuel additives to use (or not to use). My truck just hit 20 yrs old and I want to keep it as long as possible for the kids to enjoy.

I've seen stuff like Lucas that claims to clean the injectors etc. Do we need to add anything to the fuel. I hear new diesel fuel isn't the same as in the 90s/early 2000s.

I'm in toronto and winters can be somewhat harsh. Anything you would recommend for winter to make sure the truck keeps running smooth.

Lucas is a great product that works very well!

Another great product for your Diesel would be 1 liter of ATF in a full tank of fuel...it will really clean the carbon out of everything!

A little bit at every fill-up!

Btw, another great product is the Power Service Diesel Fuel Additive from Canadian Tire...the Diesel Kleen one works wonders! I use their Diesel Fuel Supplement in the Winter and then the Diesel Kleen in the summer. This is what I use in my CAT Diesels.

Thanks,

As I said before I use the Lucas. My truck runs much better compared to when I bought it when it was smoking more at highway speeds or on acceleration. I started using Lucas immediately and it cleaned up. It seems to start and idle more smoothly too. I have no idea if the mileage improved and frankly do not care. I do know the diesel we are buying today is garbage compared to 20 years ago when your truck was new. It does not have the capacity to lubricate the injection pump and has low a sulphur value a higher water content. Winter fuel is put in the tanks at stations in october but is only blended with the total crap summer fuel. So a station that is not very busy on the diesel pump will be selling you trouble if they do not treat the fuel in their tanks. Do they?? Ask Monk! I think he got pinged with some bad fuel that may have exasperated or led to another problem.

Maybe it's just in my head but for me it made a positive difference by cleaning up the injection system. The replaced engine had 35K on it when I picked up the truck; and the truck in general was clearly not being well maintained. It's a pain carrying the big jug around but for the extra small price per fillup, it is well worth it for me. Cheap insurance to keep our older design engines running well with fuel injection systems designed for a much better fuel quality than available today.

My 2.5 cents  :D

Thanks for the feedback. Will goto canadian tire and buy a jug of Lucas. I had my fuel injector pump replaced so wanna maintain the new one for the rest of the life of the truck.

Stanadyne is the only lube that GM recommends for its diesels. That said anything is better than nothing. I don't remember what year almost all of the sulphur had to be removed from diesel fuel for emissions but I know one thing for sure is that diesel shops had an increase in business by almost 50%.

I actually have never heard of it until now. It looks like good stuff by the website. Yes agreed the lack of lubricating properties in modern diesel is hell for our old pumps and injectors.

The only reason that Stanadyne is recommended for our engines is because the fuel injection pumps on all the 6.5L N/A and 6.5L TD and 6.2L diesels are all made by Stanadyne!

I have never been disappointed with the Lucas...it always does an Amazingly Great Job of cleaning the fuel system!
