Hi! Wolfin
i am not saying that i am the expert here, but the amount of scrap metal you have on the cover looks like the bottom of a piston. on your last pics, you have a chunks, with a casting on it, not much else than a piston you can find in there unless its a sleeve, but cannot figure out where a casting mark would be on a sleeve. you seems to have some pieces of ring on the plug but i can be wrong. like i said , i am not the expert just going by deduction on what i an seeing. as for the hoses, other than be returns that are unhooked its wierd. Roy surely pinpoint where they go to as well as give you his professional opinion about where the scrap metal comes from.
looks bad.

Man, I had my pan off last year and never notice any rubber hoses of any forum , I have NO clues what that was put in there....
Have to agree, sorta has the piston pieces look..,, not sure if it's a case of replacing one freak piston assembly ,
I wish I knew more about internals, hopefully someone else can chime in,,,,,

Now the tubes look like rod stud protectors from the rebuild,
the chunks, what material are they, I see a marking on two,
the stuff on the drain plug, need better images

It was late when I finally got the pan off so I didn't do much poking around. I still need to turn the engine over by hand to get a good look at all pistons but everything I could see seemed in one piece. The parts seem to be non-ferris metal, so I guess aluminum. I showed a guy at work the photos he thinks it could be a lifter, if that can end up in the pan? Although some parts seem a pretty large radius, like the ring fragments, but if it was worked on before, aka, tubes in the pan, maybe that was a previous failure.
It actually still idled pretty good when I did the ran the tranny fluid through it, I had to move it so I could park a Jeep in the driveway.
I am guessing with a piston failure I would have had some signs in the exhaust noise , wouldn't I?

the rod caps are numbered, it has been apart. Alum chunks, not lifters--steel,Might be front chain issue, take off the upper chain cover if antifreeze has been removed...have to remove this if your next step is valve covers.....

Jezzz never thought of timing stuff, but ya when I had my pan off, there's lots of space for "debris" to fall into the pan ....
i was able to stick my fingers In there to wiggle my chain, lol which made me sad after I seen all that play.,,,,hehehe

An update, last night I found that the number 5 piston is gone. Not great news, but I know what's knocking now.
How about a trail fix of pulling off the connecting rod, dump the injector back to tank and making my own multi displacement 7 cylinder?

I still for the life of me can't explain the three hoses in the pan. They are about 1/8 or 3/16 maybe got sucked in the intake? The air filter was loose when I bought the truck, but I fixed that months ago. Mystery hose....

I'm not an engine guy, but that first pic it's the cylinder walls gouged?
Man that's not good ,.....I don't get how that blew,? Especially for a rebuild ....
And ya NO clue how those hoses got in there....

The piston let go and the rod was banging against the wall. Can be sleeved or just replace....But dollars are tight after buying this truck. Look around for a used pu truck body motor to put in. Any turbo motor will be from a van body truck

Was I seeing that right? The piston looks literally gone. All I could see is the wrist pin on the rod. By the amount that rod is bent..... Is the rest of the piston driven up and jammed against the head/valves?
If so, there will be head / valve work needed too. Plus the likely stretch on the head bolts now.
Wolf.... maybe stop and look this over for the long term. If this truck is in overall good shape and you want to keep it to fix up to perfect and reliable. Think about getting a P400 longblock, put it in an forget it. I personally would be reluctant to try and salvage that engine or putting in some used POS that could grenade on you as well. That's just me though. There are very skilled guys that can do a proper rebuild.. or know the difference. I am simply not one of them.
Sorry to hear your noise turned out to be so major. I hope you get it sorted out well. Do keep us posted as there are lots of very experienced guys on here who know how to fix sh*t and where to get parts. I dont have any 6.5TD parts (YET) or I would offer you anything I had.
