That is friggen awesome!! Lol cats supervising

Your motor looks like it's almost ready for a hoist now? Trannys unbolted?

Lol many years ago when I did my motor swap change (69 GTO) from a a 400 BB Pontiac , and changed to a 454 Ls7

I unbolted every possible bolt (left motor mount bolts partialy in)and then gave a small boom truck (I think was a commercial tire truck) like 50bucks to yank my 400 and then then

Week later (after some fab work) drop in my Chevy BB....,

Plus now on a good note " try to make a positive outta it" you get to clean up and look for weird stuff, aka, like your brake bolts.....

Nuts how one find stuff...gawd knows, I've discovered lots ,lol just laying under the truck blankly staring , and the reaslize, hey that's not right, hehe

The Cat wasn't much help, she was sleeping on the back seat before she popped out through the doghouse.

The torque converter is disconnected, I just need to do the rest of the wiring and fuel lines. I made up a tranny support with some Unistrut and some 8" clamps.

I am following the army procedure in the manual so I hope I don't balls anything up.

I have a regular 2 ton shop crane with about 4 feet of reach, and as the wife says, I could use a few more inches to reach the centre of the intake. I may have to take off the bumper too.

I wish I had the army's fancy lifting sling made out of steel tubing, I will just be using a chain so I hope I have enough room. I got some bolt on lifting brackets at Princess Auto rated at 2 tons, wish me luck!

As you can see my driveway is quite narrow, and on a slope, so I had to use a come-along to pull the Humvee up the driveway. Good recovery practice I guess, and it makes me glad I bought those surplus D-ring shackles that were missing.

So, I found out where the rubber hoses in the engine came from. A former Humvee mechanic on a Facebook forum recognized them as tubes used in an army oil analysis program. They shove these hoses down the dipstick tube to draw out an oil sample for testing. He was told that if they snag and get stuck they have to drop the pan and retrieve it or engine damage can occur. He actually thought they were BSing him but he asked if it was cylinder 5 or 7.

Bingo, it was cylinder 5. At least I know what caused it, not valves or injector pump failure etc.

Noooo shit, crazy , not sure why they didn't pull the pan, it's defiantly not long, (well long as only a gasket)

Sorry to hear, that's like salt in the wound kinda thing to hear

Wow I have never heard of drawing an oil sample like that. Kind of facetious to say but.... where else would such a ridiculous method be approved? Risk the entire engine over something positive like drawing an oil sample the evaluate and protect the engine..?? There are certainly other options with minimal modification to do the same thing safely. Amazing AM General did not do the mod for this to support its primary customer.
Ok my rant is over but you must be both relieved to know the likely root cause of this failure Wolf, and totally annoyed at the same time as there were quite a few hoses in your sump.

Save up for the P-400... it should fit. I think it is just a little drama with the oil pan being a bit deeper...I believe the rest of the bolt up is the same. I know the guys here have good knowledge of this. you will not regret it later.

glad you got some closure on that failure man. It really sucks not knowing and hoping later.

All the best,

DG

Today with the help of my wife and son in law got the motor out. It was quite the struggle finding the right balance point. I had a hard time getting the driver side header and oil filter past the engine mount. But after a lot of cursing and prying and resetting the chain we got it out.

I made a crane extension out of a 2" receiver hitch reducer and it worked like a charm. Without it I would have had to remove the bumper to get close enough to the centre of the engine.

Hardly a master, I worked in industrial maintenance for twenty years so I have some skills. But I try to learn as much as I can. And I also appreciate you guys and Roy always willing to help you out when you get stuck.

I just found out diesel oil is different than engine oil. I just got 18l at Canadian Tire for $50 on sale.

You will have good piece of mind with your engine after it's done Wolf. Nice to have the confidence to go places and know it is solid.

There is so much knowledge on here. Some guys know a ton and others know from experiences. Pretty sure nobody knew about the hose in the oilpan bullshit before you told us today. I sure didn't. Bet there will be a bunch of guys borescoping through the oil drain plug this weekend.   :fishing:  :smil9:
