Hummer H3 5 Cyl.engine

Hello,everybody!

I have questions to all Hummer H3 owners. Why Hummer H3 has 5(!) cylindres engine? Why technically they decided to put 5 Cylinders? I never see it in my life on cars or motorcycles. Usually, it's 4,6,8 etc.cylinders engines but not 5! Does somebody know answer on my weird question?

Inline 5 cylinder is a great choice... historically Jeeps have used inline 6 cylinders which offer great torque but are more limited on the rev's, inline 4 cylinders on the other hand can rev up like crazy, but typically lack that low end torque needed for off-roading. The inline 5 offers a great go-between, you get great low end torque and the ability to have a nice high reving engine... I find it very responsive, not as much as my Honda 4cyl, but much more than my old 4.0L Jeep Cherokee.



The reason you see 4,6,8,10,12 cylinder engines more often is because they can be used in an opposing V format... when you get odd numbers you are generally limited to an inline type of engine.



Other cars such as Volvo and Isuzu have used 5 cylinder engines for a while now as well.

A lot of people dismiss the 3.7L inline-5 as being just a "Base" motor... when I saw it was an inline-5 I actually got a bit excited they put it in a 4x4. Jeep has recently abandon thier workhorse inline-6 in favor of a V6 which does not have nearly the low RPM grunt as the old motor... good for fuel economy, not so good for off-road. I see it as a softening of the Jeep brand for on-road use if anything.



Another one of my favorite engines is the T5 made by Volvo.... if you look at the power band it has 100% torque from 1500 to 5000rpm, which is freaking awesome.

I already read some technicals documents:



5 cyl is for the better performances and less vibration than 4 cyl., and consumme less gaz than 6 cyl.



But the calibrate for the 5 cyl. is more difficults, must be done by the pro shop!

The in line 5 gives 242 hp while the v8 gives 300hp nice for the highway but sometimes over powers the drive train off road.
