Re: Well, smoke a bit
If the smoke persists after warm up, open the oil cap and or the dipstick while the truck is on idle and see if you have any smoke or pressure pulsing out the hole to confirm if there is blowby.

Re: Well, smoke a bit
Come to think of it didn't you put the seal tabs in a while back for the same issue?? Probably blew out the tabs where they set up in the leak area.. If it fixed it the first time it really just confirms you have a combustion leak. You can always try the tabs again but they are a temporary fix so i expect the same would happen again in the future. Still a worthy 10 dollar test to rule out other new stuff that may have popped up since.
I suspect a combustion leak anyway based on your last issue with this, so the proper repair options beyond the seal tabs are more ominous.
Cant remember the year or PT of your truck,,n /a turbo??

Re: Well, smoke a bit
I never looked in anti freeze tank yet but will check as engine temps were normal when I drove around block...
Basically the smoke was mega bad at start, and I drove around the block and It seemed to " puffs " here and there, and a slight haze once warm...
As for stations, ugggg I did fill up at a no name station, and filled up both tanks and headed to Dundas from Hamilton ,(15 min drive)
Then home to Burlington (20min drive) and in the am, and when I fired it up it sounded weird/different on the start up, slight chugging and smoked like hell, was plugged in as started quick, ohh and stink like diesel,. But ya whiteish smoke,..essh I'm dreading if it's a head gasket...
I'm gong to change the fuel filter this am, and hope it's crappy fuel. It does seem it started shortly after fill....
Greenmeanie,(96 n/a) I put that stuff in not for smoke but I felt I was always purging air from the bleeder valve.. Was small though and when I added that stuff the pressure was normal again ,....

Re: Well, smoke a bit
So far I replaced my fuel filter, but (of course ) the bleeder valve broke, so just put in filter, and the old one (only year and a half) is black and seemed dirty as hell....seemed like lots of dirt
After I changed it I fired her up and left my survey, smoke came out as usual for a little bit (maybe block or 2) and seemed not bad to gone, after she warmed up,
Normally when my trucks cold it sound different till the cold throttle kick off, now don't have that normal loud chattery sound when cold.
I drive up Brant st, past hwy 5, and couldn't not see any smoke, even when I stopped ,it didn't smoke ,
But say I'm in drive around 70kms (not over drive) I'll give gas and once my foot goes off throttle it shots a little burst of smoke, white/blue Ish as rpm is tad higher, if it's in OD and I let off throttle can barely see anything, (little bit)
I can still see a slight smoke in stop and go driving here and there, but when I pulled into my drive way wasn't smoking but the fuel smell was strong from tail pipe, it's not normal for my rig,
I'll try to restart shortly and see if smokes still, lol was hoping fuel filter would work, also I notice, (like. Gas engine) I can SORTA "not sure if in my head" hear valve ish noise,. Maybe I read to much and thinking everything, but I'll keep ya posted once I restart, I kinda wanna run out this tank also since it happen right after

Re: Well, smoke a bit
Get some Lucas in the fuel asap. Conditions the crap, low sulphur fuel we get now and keeps the pump and injectors clean and lubricated.
I use it religiously on every fill. Cheap insurance against damaging the injection system...$$$$
Crappy Tire has a decent price on it.
It really sounds like you took on some bad fuel Dude.
Good luck,
D

Re: Well, smoke a bit
Monk even plugged in, if most of your glow plugs are boned it will be a pretty wild experience starting that thing cold too. I recently changed mine as 7 out 8 were done. The truck started but stunk, smoked all the colors of the damn rainbow and the engine sounded like it was trying to get out of the engine bay till it warmed up.
Add that to some less than great fuel and wow!
Just a thought....

Re: Well, smoke a bit
You could try starting without waiting for the GP light and see if it starts up the same way. If so, it could suggest the glow plugs are not working right when you do wait. On my truck i have at least one GP not working (broken off plug) and it can start pretty rough in the winter if i don't plug in the block heater. In the summer it starts good without the GP's.
On a DB2 pump like on the n/a you can also kick the gas pedal to the floor once prior to turning the start key to set the advance mechanism to see if that helps get your higher idle and the rattle back.
A black fuel filter doesn't sound very good to me. Either your fuel filter is very old and dirty or someone ran bio diesel which cleans a lot of crap out of the lines and deposits it in the filter but can also eat non Viton rubber o rings and such causing a lot of black stuff to pile up. Given that, its worth checking out the last ditch screen filter to make sure its not plugged with black rubber. Sometime the last ditch filter will come out with the fuel filter and its important to check and make sure its not stuck in the bottom of the old filter.

Re: Well, smoke a bit
Wondering if you have done a fuel pressure test to confirm 5-9 psi at the fuel test port ?
Wondering if you have drained a bit of fuel from the petcock into a glass to check for water in the fuel and or other crud ?
Wondering if you have checked for air bubbles in the fuel line by adding a piece of clear hose into the line ?
About the filter. You should be able to twist the bleeder screw off the old filter and put it on the new filter that you broke the bleeder off of. A pair of pliers will crank it out. Make sure you check the last ditch screen as well

Re: Well, smoke a bit
Thanks guys, there are some great ideas here,.,,,, I was planing to run out my tank first to see ,
So probably today I'll be putting in the new fuel...cross fingers
I did notice how ever on ice cold start up plugged in, it does fire up fast, but there is no fast idle like it used to have,
And the normally cold loud engine chatter is totally gone, it's sound like a gasser, so quiet and smooth,, but stinks of fuel, so I don't leave warm up and leave survey quick.....
As soon as warm up and I leave idle, it seems normal then, no smoke nada,.,,and on Hwy it's hard to see any smoke as well, but I do feel a LITTLE less power,....but in the city driving, it will puff out lots of smoke sorta miss I guess ,were ill smoke out some people, then goes away..
I replaced fuel filter and added some Lucas injector cleaner to this tank to help, now finally at 1/4 tank and will see if the new diesel will help, if it don't , I'll have to concede to needing new fuel injectors as mileage is high anyways....
That's about it for today, hehehe
Ps,,... I haven't got into this job tooooo much as i wanted to burn off this tank and see first,
