If worried about a dead motor, I stock a crate military 6.5 24v ready to drop in....
But thats the last option!!

Re: 6.5 l Diesel engine problem, valves or bearings?
I found a pretty decent manual on the 6.2/6.5 here at this link but I am still trying to find out how old this engine is. I don't remember square bar codes in the 80's. That's for sure....This sounds "tinny" and stops when the engine gets a little shot of fuel and surges slightly. Do you have the casting numbers off the rear of your block? I am having trouble cross referencing the SN for the engine.
Left Rear:

Right Rear:

<a data-ipb='nomediaparse' href='http://www.jatonkam35s.com/CUCVTechnica ... 237-34.pdf' class="bbc_url" title="External link">http://www.jatonkam35s.com/CUCVTechnica ... -34.pdf</a>
These numbers are cast into the back at the right and left heads. Neither match the bar code, which I am guessing is the number for the engine assembly as a spare part(?)

Re: 6.5 l Diesel engine problem, valves or bearings?
I haven't done much yet, pulled all the belt driven stuff to check for problems, found some, but not my engine trouble.
I'm working outdoors in the driveway, a small one at that, so I need to wait for better weather so it doesn't rain into my engine. Can't really afford a big bill right now since I just spent a bunch of money on my Jeeps. So I will pick away and hope that I find another loose bolt. Plan to get at it this weekend sometime.

Wolf
LH numbers identify the model or vintage. Your block is a 506 (Optimizer). Same LH numbers as mine, which is a warranty replacement engine that was cast in 2007.
RH number identifies the casting date. 06 23 M = As far as I can tell, June 23 2005 as the date your engine was cast. Check the forums for details on deciphering the numbers.
So you have the 2nd best version of this engine. The P400 version is the holy grail of 6.5 TDs. This was offered late 2007 on.

Wow, I had no idea it would be that new. I was hoping for early 90's at best. Thanks for that info Derek, I want to make sure I can get the correct gaskets if I need to pull parts off.

Wolf, just confirm using the block numbers before / while ordering parts. And do not buy any aftermarket S*hit. Greenmeanie or Roy are the ones to ask about any parts that may be better than factory. Mine is all factory as far as I know...so far so good on this vintage block with 40K kms.

Re: 6.5 l Diesel engine problem, valves or bearings?
Good news, bad news, and perhaps no news. I did the tranny fluid flush for hits and jiggles since as of this morning I hadn't yet found a problem. Then ran it a few minutes, and it looked like there were metal flecks in the oil so I figured I am going to look at the bottom end.
Drained the oil and found a few bits of metal on stuck on the plug and one plopped into the drain pan. Expletive inserted here.
So I figured I would focus on the bottom end for my troubleshooting. It was a real pain to get of the oil pan, I am embarrassed to say it took me several hours. I pulled the starter, but in hind sight should have pulled out the front driveshaft too. There was no way to break the RTV sealant they had used. I ended up using a bottle jack against the frame rail after getting 75% of the sealant out with a putty knife and a few pry bars and brake star wheel adjusters.
Now I can't be sure what, but something blew up in there, and I found two sections of rubber hose in the pan too, any ideas? Were they seals? Or just some junk that fell in at some point?
I can't see any problems, from the bottom all pistons look intact.
