Bolt size - Nerf Bars/RockSlider mounts

Post by MetcalfeH3 »

Afternoon folks..

Anybody know what size the holes for the factory nerf bars and rock sliders are on a H3 (2010 if it matters...).

I picked up a set of aftermarket step sides (I've got kids......) and the bolts they came with are just a tad too large.

Almost ready to take pics... roof racks on, locking gas cap on ... nerf-bars missing bolts .. stubby antenna in the mail ....

Thanks

Some folks on HummerForums swear they are 10mm ... weird, 10mm wouldn't fit on mine, even with an airgun !!

Pics coming... a few more pieces to add to the beast.

I believe the bolts are the same as the stock Chrome step bars have on our 08 which we removed after damage from an accident you may find them in place (to keep holes clean for later dealer installs).

remember to coat threads with anti_seize compound (nothing worse than laying under a truck trying to loosen a seized bolt.)use WD 40 to clean holes it will remove dirt then evaporate( one thing it's good for.) saves force needed to drive bolts into holes and threads on bolts.

100% they are M10 1.50 standard pitch 20, 25, or 30 length. 20 length your arms will like you better. Put anti seize on them. Don't goop it on just brush it on the end of the first few threads. Yes they go in hard but don't use anything but a hand tool or you will be using a tap later. They go in very hard because they are coated and if the holes were not plugged the littlest bit of corrosion is in there. Use PB blaster in the holes. Let it sit over night. If it's real tough, spray it in and let it sit every night for a few nights to get it real soft.

M10 and 3/8" are close but not close enough to hold under too much torsion and vibration. Just like wrenches 5/32" and 4mm- 5/16" and 8mm- 7/16" and 11mm- 15/32" and 12mm and 19/32 and 15mm- 3/4" and 19mm- 29/32" and 23mm. They are all close but if you try to use any to torque the wrong one your going to strip it.
Let it Flex!

I've noticed alot of inconsistancy out there with bolts on the Hummers between Metric and imperial... Mine does have a mix of the two...

All I'll say is remember to take them off when/if you go offroading.... never realized that my first trip and had to use a tow strap on a tree to bend them back into shape, and then on a run not too long ago as I completely forgot! Used Sugar's (He's soo sweet!) winch which surgically pulled them back into shape...
